I'm loading some 270s with Trail Boss. Here's the data: 130 gr hdy sp, starting load 17.73 grains Trail Boss, minimum COL 3.180 (I've loaded them all to 3.185 so far).

I know this is primarily a cowboy action type powder for lead bullets, but I just wanted something to plink with. These are going to be fired from a Ruger no. 1 single shot rifle.

I plan to get out to the range this weekend. Meanwhile, any thoughts, so far?

I know a guy that loads his 270 with trail boss. His load makes around 1300 fps. 100 yard point of impact is about same with his hunting load, so off hand target practice on steel is really nice with the trail boss load. Works like a dream.

What percent of a full case is your load?

70-100% of case excluding seated bullet is recommended range.

Trail boss has been loads of fun in everything we've tried it in. My wife's Model 99 Savage in 250 has a huge chamber. I load what will fill the case to the base if the bullet, seat the bullet tight to the lands, and tell her to go have fun. No recoil, and with the bullet into the lands, you get perfect cases while plinking.

The 17.7 grains was 10 percent down from the maximum load of 19.7. But I've decided to go with the starting load (as per Hogdon's load data online) which is actually 14.0 grains. That would be just a little less than a Lee 3.4cc dipper since 14.0 x .2172 (VMD) = 3.04 CC. Anyhoo, that's what I'm going with. Should be fine and definitely won't require compressing the bullet into the powder.

I have found that TB produces very wide velocity spreads in bottleneck cases and consequently poor accuracy. That's not gospel though, so good luck.

I loaded TB for 7.62x54R for my Mosin Nagant, 180gn Sierra SP, with 17gn of TB. The best velocity I saw was 1450fps. But was not accurate at 100yards,actually had to elevate to get on target. Works great at 50yards for plinking.

I guess it would work. I use it for 7x57. But why? My No 5 roller is old and I don't know of any old 270's.

Hodgdon claims Trail Boss is the replacement for IMR SR 4759 but it poor substitute. Sure it will produce reduced velocity loads but I have found accuracy to be lacking. It's too bad Hodgdon was fit to discontinue the remaining three SR powders, they worked very well especially SR 4759 Dr reduced rifle loads!

I hope you can find a load you like, please keep us updated.

Here is the load I used:

130 gr Hdy SP
14 grains Trail Boss

Took them to the range. Fair accuracy (100 yds), and zero recoil. I mean it turns a 270 into a .257 roberts. Very enjoyable for plinking.

the lack of accuracy seems to be, at least with my experience, not so much with the bottleneck case but with jacketed bullets. I've done jacketed bullets, cast and the berry's plated. cast and berry's seem to be the two best when it comes to hitting what your aiming at using TB. its fine plinking powder for what I do and puts a smile on everyones face when they shoot my 416 Taylor.
