The foolproof method - originally published by the powder company, and now less commonly available because so much commercial data is available - is to fill the case to the base of the bullet. This is your maximum load - you don't want to compress Trail Boss. Reduce the maximum load by 30% for your starting load - anything less puts you at risk of sticking a bullet in the bore. Anything in between will be safe.
It's the simplest powder to load with if you get it to meter. I burned pounds of it in a 45-70 until I realized that a minimum trapdoor charge of imr4198 did the same thing while costing less and metering much better.
I still use it but for every trailboss load there's a reduced load with a cheaper powder that does just the same. I really do like it though , easy to ignite and no position sensativaty because the whole case is full. I find best results with trailboss with a max charge. As previously noted, do not compress.
When you figure out how much you want of it, take a case, cut it to that length, and attach a simple handle to make your own scoop.
I like Trailboss for some things, great powder for a beginner as you will never get a double charge in a case. However, I think it has been put on a production "hold" so may be a while before more hits the market.
