Buford Tune (www.appstraining.com) announced he would be teaching an intermediate shooting class May 16 for permit holders who wanted to upgrade their skills.Feeling I can always stand more info & practice I contacted the school to sign up.As I had not gotten my original permit training thru APPS Billie the office manager told me I'd have to attend the classroom part of the permit class to attend the intermediate class at a discounted price because I already hold a permit.I agreed & attended this past Saturday expecting a review of what I already knew:always a good idea but usually kinda boring. Well, seems the old dog CAN learn a few new tricks!
Mr.Tune is an excellent teacher who grabs & keeps your attention.
His language is deliberately salty "to give some of you folks a dose of reality shock. This class is not about target shooting:it's about shooting to live & things are not pretty or politically correct
in the street".Blending humor & seriousness expertly Mr.Tune introduces the class to "How to keep from getting your ass kicked by the police" (Chris Rock's excellent skit) while kicking your attacker's ass.He introduced the class to revolvers & autoloader (with an obvious preferance for the former),holds, stances, loads,
carry methods & mindset.A state-required video on the law was shown with Q&A afterward:Mr.Tune making it quite clear he is not an attorney & recommending one contact an attorney who specializes in this area while mentioning his own by name. While I was indeed aware of 80% of what Mr.Tune teaches in the classroom I enjoyed the review, his humor & learned about at least two changes in the law I was unaware of.
Sunday was range day:wet, windy & cold for this time of year in middle Tennessee. As we sat on the bleachers shivering Mr.Tune stated what a couple of us had commented on amongst ourselves:"It's wet, cold & muddy. So what? You think the bad guys only come out in pretty weather? When do most attacks occur?(at night)So what you gonna do:tell him to wait until it's a 70 degree pretty day?".Range safety was discussed, firearms safety reviewed from the previous day then we hit the grass to practice drawing & stance.Mr.Tune teaches the Center Axis Relock hold which I had tried once before & wasn't impressed with until this class & Brian (an associate instructor) showed me what I was doing wrong & explained the rational behind the CAR stance & hold("Humm....I can see a use for this but....").After a short lunch break we drew targets & hit the firing line.Mr. Tune runs a hot line:an idea I heartily support as everyone KNOWS his & the other guy's gun is loaded & horseplay is non-existant.On command we drew & fired 1 round at 3 yards:I got my guy's rt.elbow & began to think "Yeah I was right about this CAR crap".Brian corrected my stance (I didn't have my right foot back far enough) & we fired another round:center of mass! After about 30 rounds at 3 yards we moved back to 7 yards & fired using the sights from the CAR stance:I put 1 in the lt.shoulder & the rest in the chest/abdomen region. All shooters then policed the area & a review/Q&A session was held. All in all a most ejoyable & profitable 2 days.
While I do not agree with everything Mr.Tune teaches I must admit he presents his rationales well & with reason rather than emotion. While he underscores his lectures with the idea of "there
are no rules on the street:no referee who's gonna throw a yellow flag & no time-outs" I believe he could develop this more throughly,as he could the value of mindset prior to an incident. His permit class is quite adamant that it is a basic qualifying class & that neither his classes nor he is the final word on self-protecton:a trait I greatly respect in any teacher.I admire his emphasis on practice & further training:"Sure I want you to take more of my classes & yes I want to make money. But what I really want is for you (students) to know that you need more practice & more training. This class is to qualify you to get your permits:you will quickly see on the range that you need to practice & train to shoot to live;that you are not badass gunfighters."
I do not hesitate to recommed Buford Tune & APPS to you.
