I am planning to drive to NY State from Fla. While transiting SC, Md, NJ and NY (State not NYC) I plan to have the gun and ammo in separate locked boxes in a hard to access location in the Mini Van. While at the home in NY I intend to keep the gun and ammo in their boxes in the home. Any Advice.

As long as you have everything locked up and separate you shouldn't have any problem. You don't say where you're going in NY State but you are probaly taking two days to get there. I'd plan my overnight in VA where you shouldn't be hassled so I wouldn't have to stay in MD or NJ overnight as your status as a traveller canb be misinterpreted in those states. The FOPA is even posted on the NJ State Police website so they shouldn't give you a second look the way you're transporting your guns. NY State is much different than NYC but I'd check on the web to be sure of the laws there.

Just remember that the FOPA is predicated on your possession of the gun(s) being legal where the trip begins and where the trip ends. Your first task is to ascertain with 100% certainty that it will be legal for you, an out-of-stater, to possess the guns in the home where you will be staying in NY. If you can't meet that hurdle, carrying the guns in locked cases doesn't help at all.
