Travel from Florida to Pennsylvania with ammo?

Please note that their definition includes cases, primers, and even projectiles by themselves. I don't want to sound paranoid, but with all the snooping that is going on, they might have easily already found probable cause to search her vehicle.

Since I doubt that I can find every little bit of 22 ammo that is probably lodged somewhere in my car, I think I would just avoid the area to be sure I complied with their laws.

I gave some information to my colleague, who thought I was a bit looney. I did however give him references to the businessman's upcoming jail term.

Here's a link to the District Of Columbia Official Code online. By typing in 7-2506.01 and hitting the search button you get to the section that describes persons permitted to possess ammunition in DC. By typing in 7-2501.01 and hitting the search button you get to the definitions section that describes what constitutes ammunition:

It would be best to just go around DC via I95 on the Beltway. On the other hand if your colleague doesn't mind the possibility of spending a couple of days in the Central Cell Block downtown tell him to go for it. A good lawyer will likely get him through it and the aftermath but there would still be a gun related illegal ammunition charge and arrest on his record.

and......all of that for a simple little souvenir.

Without powder or primer I cannot see any oroblem, but I amnot a lawyer. Ask the N R A.

Don't rely on the "drive carefully and you won't get pulled over" idea. You could be the best, most cautious driver in the world and get hit by some idiot who is texting at the wheel. Not your fault, but then when the cops clear the accident, they just so happen to notice the (whatever forbidden object) you happen to have in the trunk that popped open when you got hit.

Bottom line: absolutely stay out of DC. Luckily, the main Interstate 95 goes around through Maryland, except for (not kidding) about 20 yards or so of the Wilson Bridge that is technically in DC. Whatever you do, don't tangle with I-295 or I-395, which cut though the middle of the District.

Traffic is as good a reason as any to avoid DC.

And the ONLY reason to avoid it. Folks need to loosen the tinfoil thinking that driving through somewhere means the cops will pull you over and give you a LEO colonoscopy looking for some "illegal" substance

As for the police pulling you over and looking for forbidden objects, it's not tinfoil thinking at all for two different reasons:

One, they don't have to pull you over; you could be involved in a collision that is not even your fault, resulting in law enforcement showing up.

Two, getting pulled over and then being searched for guns happened to a Florida family on an Interstate passing through Baltimore in January 2014. No arrest or charges resulted, but spending a couple of hours on the shoulder of a freeway being searched and questioned is not something I personally would enjoy.

So we are talking about 1 car in about 500,000? You have better odds of being hit by a meteor. The insanity about these states really needs to stop. Follow the law, drive normally and the ODDS are all will go just fine. Too many folks have never even driven these roads (and I have many times between Atlanta and NYC going through DC), many times using the speed limit as a mere suggestion and have never had issues. Cops really have a lot on their plate. Looking for possible legal gun owners from out of state is NOT one of them.

the 495 beltway west only goes through Maryland. the 495 east has the short 20 yards that touches dc. if the lights come on just get off the bridge before stopping. I dont know of any law restriction and transport of ammo through Maryland.

Well . . . . this is just sad.

That Americans feel the need to worry about dummy rounds for crying out loud.

This is not a criticism of the OP, he's just being considerate for his friend.

But, I swear - I almost expect a thread asking whether its a good idea to purchase PopTarts anymore. You never know who might be watching if you inadvertently bite it in such a way as to suggest the shape of a 'gun'. Its self censorship & self regulation of personal actions. This is commonly found down through out history in dictatorships. Its the belief that 'they' are omnipotent and watching behind every corner.

"Land of the Free, Home of the Brave" ?

"They hate us for our freedom." ?

Really ? Are we kidding ?

No it is not really ammunition but I thought I read a piece about a businessman somewhere being on trial for having a SPENT CASING -- and this obviuosly includces that and a real projectile (just nothing to push it).
That was in DC. The only place that could potentially be a problem along your route would be Maryland, and as others have said, even that shouldn't be a problem. I have to transit that state often on my way to WV and we normally just make sure everything is unloaded, in the trunk, FOPA compliant etc., follow the traffic laws to the T and don't stop.

Don't stop

Sometimes 'don't stop' can mean:

- don't get a flat,
- don't run out of gas,
- don't have a car accident,
- don't need emergency medical attention, or
- don't get diverted by a road construction detour into a jurisdiction where you are non-compliant.

For those reasons I'd give DC a wide berth.
