Travel through Illinois, not to Illinois

You do realize most of Illinois is rural and crime outside the urban centers is quite low. Guns are really, really common. Deer, goose, and pheasant hunting are big business there. Downstate folks absolutely despise the stupid rules which come out of Springfield (the capital). It's a large state with 102 counties, of which 7 pretty much control the vote. Everyone gets stuck with whatever silly ideas generate out of Cook county.
Seriously. Even at the height of its gun-ban craziness in the 80's -early 2000s (pre MacDonald)...Chicago had EXPLICIT LANGUAGE in its gun laws that allowed travelers with cased firearms "lawful in their home residence" to make transit through. This meant that UNLIKE IN NY, NJ and so on...one could safely fly in and out from O'Hare Airport with ARs and pistols without issue. EVEN BACK THEN! You can hate on Illinois all you want, but that doesn't jibe with reality.

I'm sure these folks are all wonderful people, in a bad situation. But so are the folks getting horsed, by poorly thought out legislation, that targets innocent travelers.

I'm not sure which laws you are referring to that are affecting innocent travelers through the state. I posted the link to the Illinois State Police bulletin for traveling with firearms. I honestly haven't heard of anyone in recent times getting harassed or arrested for running afoul of some unknown law regarding firearms.

The plain and simple of it is the state does not recognize your non-Illinois carry permit for walking around in public while armed, and they have numerous no-go places for resident permittees as well. However people with non-Illinois permits can carry while in your car. When you are out of a car the gun needs to be unloaded in a case.
