Traveling in the northeast with a handgun

There is a lot of fear out there. About every 3rd year, my wife and I, along with 3 or 4 grandchildren, go to a lake front house at Lake Elmore, Vermont. We've been doing this for the past 15 years.

I always carry one handgun, usually a Glock 36 .45ACP. with a spare 6 round mag. We always travel the same route, South Florida up through Maryland, Pennsylvania to New York, bypassing Connecticut and Massachusetts, and entering Vermont at SR9, Bennington.

Then, almost straight north to the lake. Per FOPA,1986, the gun goes into a Brinks lock box, ammo separate, on the 30 minute Maryland "neck" and the longer trip through New York to SR9 and Vermont.

Of course there are risks. No warranty's on anything in this life. But in those 15 years, not one ticket or problem. Drive very close or at the speed limit, lights in good working order, use your noodle. ;) Especially in MD and NY. :scrutiny:

Next June, we are making the 3,500 mile RT again. If, as Judy Garland sang so eloquently in Meet Me In St.Louis, 1944, the fates allow. :)

Whatever you decide, have a great trip, OP. You'll be seeing beautiful country.

I understand your desire to carry, but think about risk vs reward. Is it worth the risk of a felony charge to carry? Would it be possible to carry any or all of: a collapsable baton/tactical cane, mace, or even a tactical knife and/ or tomahawk and feel safe?

Permits

New York State requires a state license to possess a firearm

The State requires a permit/license for a handgun. It does not require such for a long gun (unless it is an "assault" weapon). The exception to this is NYC which does require permits for all firearms.

Interesting stuff here for travelers.

Q: What if you wanted to extend your travels?

Say, from Maine through Quebec to Labrador & Newfoundland.

Maybe even over to Greenland & up toward the pole.

What hassles up there?

PS: I know Quebec (and Canada in general) are problematic for any gun. I'm just not sure if the rules change once once gets into Labrador and Newfoundland due to the extreme conditions there, bear defense, etc. And once one is up that far, there are few roads, so travel is by boat and small plane.

And to be clear, I'm sincere with my question. Other than Scotland and Ireland, those are the places I want most to visit.

Handguns will be the stickler in Canada; Folks do bring rifles and shotguns in regularly. Have a friend who lived in NY near the Canadian border. He has some form of pass that lets him go back and forth to clubs for shoots (talking about shotgun/clay target stuff). Been a while since I saw him last (snowbird) so do not know if it is still that way.

I can't believe I wrote what I did. I did not intend to insult anybody. I mis-wrote a member's name while thinking of something else I was working on. I was multi-tasking and I guess my brain is not handling that well these days. In the future, I will be more focused while writing posts. My apologies to anyone I may have offended. It was totally unintentional.
