There is a lot of fear out there. About every 3rd year, my wife and I, along with 3 or 4 grandchildren, go to a lake front house at Lake Elmore, Vermont. We've been doing this for the past 15 years.
I always carry one handgun, usually a Glock 36 .45ACP. with a spare 6 round mag. We always travel the same route, South Florida up through Maryland, Pennsylvania to New York, bypassing Connecticut and Massachusetts, and entering Vermont at SR9, Bennington.
Then, almost straight north to the lake. Per FOPA,1986, the gun goes into a Brinks lock box, ammo separate, on the 30 minute Maryland "neck" and the longer trip through New York to SR9 and Vermont.
Of course there are risks. No warranty's on anything in this life. But in those 15 years, not one ticket or problem. Drive very close or at the speed limit, lights in good working order, use your noodle. Especially in MD and NY.
Next June, we are making the 3,500 mile RT again. If, as Judy Garland sang so eloquently in Meet Me In St.Louis, 1944, the fates allow.
Whatever you decide, have a great trip, OP. You'll be seeing beautiful country.
