I am traveling to CA on vacation. I am seeing some conflicting info about having a gun on the trip. This is the best info I have found:

http://oag.ca.gov/firearms/travel

If I understand this correctly, I can have my revolver in my van as long as it is unloaded and locked in a lock box. The conflicting info I am seeing is saying things like "It must be a DOJ approved lockbox" and "you may only have a firearm in the vehicle if you are transporting it to and from a range or hunting event" etc. The link above says nothing about that.

What I want to know is can I carry an unloaded 5 shot revolver that is locked in a sentry safe type lock box along with a speed loader at the ready and do it legally while on vacation in CA?

Trust me, the trip is not my idea.

There's a LOT of great things in CA. Don't let those with a lack of knowledge or paranoia scare you off.

Yes, you can do that as you described.

I have lived and traveled pretty extensively in CA.... I've even got a few tickets over the decades with both CA an AZ license plates while in CA. One of those times was waaaay over the speed limit with AZ plates (middle of no where, no traffic, clocked me from about a mile away.)

I have never ever once been asked if I had a firearm, despite those that say they'll strip search you if you have out of state plates and go 1 mph over the limit.

So..... where you going in CA? I'm currently fairly near Disneyland.

Traveling to Ca with a gun is no big deal. California is nothing like some of the east coast states.

First... This is the reference to use: http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Transporting

Simple: standard five shot revolver in a locked container (a soft gun case, hard case, or anything else you can lock - NOT glove box), won't get you in any trouble. Out of reach of the driver is not legally required but may help in a stop.

The tricky rule: No judges! Meaning Taurus or s&w Governor.

Depending on which part of the state you are visiting there are some very nice places to shoot. I regularly take several guns when I visit the state because of that awesome public land free shooting.

The gun can even be loaded in the locked container.

I believe that to be a good way to run afoul of Penal Code 25850. Speed loader is OK, loaded mag is OK, but not loaded gun.

Good call about the Judges/Governors.

I was wrong and youre right about the loaded part.

You can have a loaded mag (no more than 10 rounder) or a loaded speed loader in the same locked case as the gun is in but the gun can not be loaded.

Schwing, Carlsbad area should be nice and since your relatives are in LA, you probably know that area or they'll help you out. 'LA', generally speaking, isn't nearly as bad as it used to be. Personally, I still don't like the entire LA area much; but that's just me.

Agree with Danez and Ed Ames. California is a wonder scenically.I traveled extensively in my 3 years living in the Bay Area. From Crescent City to San Ysidro and all other points! Just follow their firearms carrying advice. You'll be fine.

Have a great trip and a great time. :)
