so therefore I'll be unarmed....I'm paranoid about checking baggage so even a pocketknife is out....any suggestions?

Wooden spikes for for killing politicians, after all they are just like vampires.

I would take knives if i were you. Nothing wrong with checking them in your luggage.

I don't check ANY luggage... my dad instilled that in me a loooooong time ago, it sucks getting to a business trip and not having your suit...... I guess I can use my cd's ...LoL!!!

Don't come here?
not an option....national prayer gathering, already booked the flight and hotel...... too much money spent already.......

Get a small bag that you don't mind losing. Pack it with whatever weapon you feel is appropriate and legal to take to the District. If you don't check it, you won't be able to take it on the aircraft.

Or drive. Your call.

You may be flying into the DC area, but you're gonna land in Virginia or Maryland. (Probably Dulles or Reagan, BWI is a quite a ways out there).

As such, you CAN fly with a gun. Just follow the guidelines.

Now as for being in DC, I'm sure you won't be able to carry it while in DC, but why not do as doc2rn says and stay in Arlington, lots of nice hotels there.

Edit:

national prayer gathering, already booked the flight and hotel...... too much money spent already.......

That's a sunk cost. How much money you've spent is now irrelevant to whether you should come out here. Your only concern should be do I want to go to the prayer gathering enough to be disarmed while I am in DC.

Hey Quakillz,

I reciently transfered into the heart of darkness and went from full time carry to full time disarmed in DC. It's not he end of the world. The best weapon you have is under your hat anyway. Situation awareness and the right mindset is all you need. Shoot me a pm with the area you're staying at, and I'll steer you clear of the danger zones.

traveling to DC in Aug...

I'm sorry.

so therefore I'll be unarmed....I'm paranoid about checking baggage so even a pocketknife is out....any suggestions?

Don't go is the first thing that comes to mind.

Really though, DC is a beautiful city in some respects. Stay out of the bad areas and you should be fine. See the Monument. Go to the Lincoln Memorial. Whatever you do, make sure you see The Wall. Too bad it's so late in the year, the cherry blossoms reflecting in the water of the Reflecting Poll are a great sight just before sun down. See the Smithsonian if you have the chance.

Stay on the well beaten path, relax and enjoy the trip. For all of it's problems it's still our nations capital.

thanks for the help . there is a group of 35 of us on this one trip. not sre where they have us booked to stay, but I WILL get a knife somehow... even if I do *ugh* have to check a bag (they want us to ride metro...) I think we fly in to Baltimore but don't exactly remember...I'll have to find my itenerary....TheCall (the prayer gathering) is on the National Mall, so anything around that area will be visited....

Let us know before you get in town.

Big tour groups seem to stay our in Crystal City and/or Rosslyn. That would be Arlington, and defnitly able to carry there. Can't in DC.

If you can't make it to the National Firearms Museum, check out the gun collection at the American Indian Museum. Its pretty cool - though they have the wrong view of firearms (label them implements of oppression rather than tools of freedom)

Quak,

Carry things that are "better than nothing", for example, a Kubaton stick.

I lived in DC for years for law school. I lived on the fringes of some tough neighborhoods. I walked everywhere and used the metro and taxis.

Keep your wits about you and your head up. DC is not like South Central Los Angeles where guys will start mess just to look hard. It seems like DC's crime is due to folks being poor, not guys trying to look bad-ass. That may not make you feel any better. However, if you mind your own business and project a vibe as someone not to mess with, you'll be fine. I recommend venturing throughout DC, but that's just me. I love the town and the rich culture.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not advising that you venture off into bad areas. I'm merely expressing how I am, which may be a bit risky sometimes. I'm saying that I wouldn't let the bad areas stop me from experiencing parts of DC that I want to experience.

Regards,
Jake

so, what IS legal to cary in DC??... I know guns are out, but what else can't be carried?...

if you do find yourself in a bad side of town, be polite and formal and make eye contact without looking threatening. I know it sounds silly, but it works.

That, and the people who move the most like predators there will be the police on the street. It says a lot for a city when you get worse vibes from the cops than the drug dealers.

that's my .02, FWIW

If (unfortunately WHEN) a panhandler approaches you look them straight in the eye, say "I'm sorry I don't hand out money" and keep walking.

16 years working in DC and only ONCE did a panhandler cause me trouble.

Don't go to NW DC above about 11'th and K street (north past the new convention center). They are "gentrifying" the area but when you cross that line it gets ghetto really fast.

DO go over to Chinatown and try the resturants. Fado is a great irish pub and "La Rosa Mexicana" near the Verizon center is fantastic (though expensive).

During tourist season follow the standard advice for pickpockets, ESPECIALLY down on "the mall". Make it a point to see the WWII and the FDR memorials (heck try to see 'em all but you'll never do it in one trip)

And if you take the metro train PLEASE don't get to the top (or bottom) of the escalators and then STOP, it jams everything up. Just keep moving and look for your directions/signs/etc. when you are out of the line of traffic for the escalators.

I have traveled all over the USA and most recently spent 3 months in DC and Arlington Va.

Some advice since you don't like to check baggage.

Use one of the shipping companies and have whatever you want shipped to your hotel overnight.

Check with them ahead of time but I have never had a problem.

I usually have three boxes shipped, office, kitchen and personal stuff. Never late, never messed with and never lost.

Just a thought.

I would recommend a plain wood cane from the drugstore. No problem to fly with and no problem in DC.

Given the lack of room aboard commercial flights these days, I find myself a bit stiff after a flight!;)
