Traveling with gun – visit to Mexico

Thanks for all the advice. I was actually hoping that there would be someone on this list from Why or Lukeville, but I guess that is not the case. Let me clarify a few points. I don’t need any more advice on how to smuggle or not smuggle a gun into Mexico, as I am not going to do that. I live on the border, and I am already familiar with the consequences. I don’t need any more advice about not going into Mexico. That isn’t an option; I have family there and I am going to visit them. There was a sign two years ago in Why that advertised secure gun storage. I did not see that sign this time so I guess that is no longer available. If any one knows anything about that, please let me know. I could use the phone number. Why and Lukeville are the only two towns I pass through both going into and out of Mexico, storing the gun in Phoenix or Tucson is not an option. Even Ajo is out of the way on my return, but I might be able to make that work. The drove from Rocky Point to home is 930 miles which does not give me a lot of time for things like waiting for a bank to open. I get to the border at 6 am when it opens, and by 9 am I am already through Tucson. I have considered burying the gun in the desert, but there are a lot of Border Patrol agents, Park Rangers and drug smugglers in that area, so I am a bit concerned about that option working. I will have to look into the idea of a storage locker at a Mexican insurance agency in Why. If anyone comes up with other ideas that might work, by all means, post them. The question was worth asking, but so far, it remains unanswered. Never the less, thanks for the input.

Mexico?
Lived there for a year in Hermosillo, 1999-2000. Been going back year after year ever since, twice a year sometimes. Had a few run ins (minor vehicle accidents and such) with the local cops and federales. Always, was able to talk my way out of the situation or give them twenty bucks, and everybody was happy. Carried a snubby .38 down there once,(illegal as ever, don't get caught). Also hunted deer (in season or not who knew and it didn't matter) down there with an old winchester 30-30. I was the guest and it was the "best" rifle they had, everyone else used beat up .22's, sure was fun!
Love going to the beaches (not rocky pointy) and the mountain towns like Alamos. I'll continue to go down there and if I ever think I need a firearm while there I'll just get one in country.
Hasta!

Gun Cleaned

I'd leave my gun at a gunshop for it to be cleaned somewhere along the border. You don't have to be the resident of the state you are in, like when pawning a gun to an FFL. That would be a cheap way to leave one on the US side.

I believe about the only way an American can legally bring a gun to Mexico is for hunting or target matches. The Mexicans limit you to the number of guns and ammo last I read and issue you a sort of permit/license. The hunting guides hook their clients up with the gun license. That would seem your only way to bring it into Mexico without getting into big trouble.

I spend to much time in San Carlos. The fishing is great. The gun, good luck.

If you do find a solution, please post it for the rest of us. I haven't been across the border in almost 5 years, but my wife does want me to take her to visit family there.

Have you contacted the police departments in those towns to see if they know of a legal method to store your guns while in Mexico? I think they would be very interested in helping someone who wants to follow the law for a change.

Are mexican citizens allowed to own any handguns ? I see mention of .22 and 30/30 above. I assume prison time is the penalty for bringing guns or ammo into mexico .

This has been proven to be a "Bad Idea™" in recent times. Nowadays, LE is more likely to try to turn the requester into a criminal than help them.

Contacting an attorney is a safer suggestion.

I don't know about other banks, but I know mine and most likely others will not let you store a firearm in a safe deposit box. Definitely read the fine print on the agreement if anyone tries this.

Fortunately most banks don't have,

Metal detectors.
Mind reading devices.

Nor do they ask you what you are putting in the box nor are they present to witness what is going in the box.

So how would they know?
