I got a good deal @ the Ft. Worth Cabelas on a .338 Win Mag Remington Model 700 XCR, the stainless and synthetic model. It was new, but last year's version, I later learned. The newer ones have the XM-Pro trigger, which is supposed to be an improvement over the crummy trigger that came with the gun. I want to upgrade the trigger. I plan to use the gun for elk.

What would you guys recommend, a Timney, Jewel (SP?) of a Jard? From what I can tell the first two are complete assemblies, and the Jards, at the ones on eBay for $57.00, are just the trigger and sear. Another option, a big hassle, would be to send the gun to Remington to install an XM tirgger. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I didn't know they were using a new trigger. If it's like the old one, it's poretty easy to adjust, and when properly adjusted, gives an excellent break for a hunting rifle. Aside from that, I think you lose the bolt stop if you install the Jewel or Timney triggers.

This Rifle Basix trigger is supposed to be pretty good, and it preserves the safety and bolt stop.

I can't speak from experience, though. I've never used this one.

Bolt stop on a Rem700

The rem 700 bolt stop does use a the rear sear pin. I would be surprised to find an after market trigger did away with this pin. Having looked at Brwonells this pin is used!

I just looked at Brownells web sight, Almost all the Rem700 triggers they sell, will take the Rem safety assembly, and most have the bolt stoplever built onto the trigger group.

The only Assemblies that do not use the REM safety or any other: are TARGET!

I've had excellent results with both the Rifle Basix and Shilen triggers. The Timney's and Jewell's are just as good.

I have a Timney on my M70 and love it. For a hunting rifle, I'd just adjust the remington trigger. I probably should have adjusted mine 1st before going straight to the Timney.

Just adjust the factory trigger. I can be set to break clean at 3 pounds by any competant gunsmith, or if you are vaguely mechnical, you can do it yourself.

A Jewell trigger will set you back over $200. Strongbad's comment that a Jewell is 'just as good' as the RifleBasix is the understatement of the year. The Jewell is a three lever that can be safely set to 8 oz. The benchrest without the safety can be set even lighter.

Take a look at this link.

Thanks, guys. I'll try doing it myself... but

... before I remove the action from the stock, do I need a certain amount of torque when I'm putting it back in? In othe words, can I overtighten or undertighten the screws attaching the action to the stock?

Also, I bought a "spring kit" from eBay that is supposed to help. Do you think that will help? Thanks again.
