Just got a S&W M14 Classic. Trigger pull is very heavy. My old 686 has at least a 12-lb pull. This M14 is even heavier. My trigger finger is very sore after dry firing. I tried loosening the screw on the bottom of the grip. It lightened the pull but the single action stopped working as a result. So what should I do to lighten the pull to about 10-lb?

By the way, the single action pull feels perfect.

This M14 is one of those newer S&W with MIM parts. Do springs for older, non-MIM guns work on newer, MIM guns like mine?

If S.S.S. lists them for all K frames they should fit though a call to them should put your mind at ease.

While I agree with the consensus that MIM parts are simply a money saver for the manufacturer they aren't necessarily bad. Where practical, you can carefully remove any nasty ridges from them and buff them to a high polish. The reduction in friction at contact points can often reduce trigger pull (if MIM parts are present there).

I don't know about "nasty ridges" on MIM parts; they are actually smoother than machined parts which often had tool marks.

My 642 action was a bit stiff out of the box. After about 1,000 cycles of the trigger (lots of dry fire), I removed the side plate, cleaned and relubricated the internals. It made a noticeable difference. The trigger is now nice and slick, just about as nice as my K Frames. That might be all that Model 14 needs.

And as others have mentioned, the stain screw is not an adjustment screw, though many think it is. One big problem that can occur is breaking of the mainspring stirrups, attached to the hammer, as loosening the screw alters the geometry of the flat mainspring, which causes to put more load on the stirrups. Not good.
