My understanding is that under both NRA and CMP Service Rifle rules require that Service Rifles have to have trigger pulls that measure 4.5 pounds or more. I am looking at purchasing a Colt HBAR that has a Colt match trigger. This rifle has a trigger pull that measures at about 3 pounds 15 ounces. Would I be able to use this rifle in NRA High Power and/or CMP matches? Would I simply be put in another class or would I be unable to shoot for score? There is some speculation that the trigger in this gun is adjustable. I want to know if this would be a good competition gun before I drop coin on this rifle.

I'm not sure if the trigger is adjustable or not. You could get the half pound by bending the trigger spring if nothing else. Other than that you would shoot in match rifle class. Bend the spring.

Problems with the Colt are the block in the lower which is a pain when you upgrade the trigger. Another could be the chrome lined barrel. I had one go out in 1500 rounds due to flaking. I wouldn't worry about this because barrels can be had cheap.

3lb 15oz is only 1 ounce short of 4lbs. You should be able to bend the springs to get the last 1/5 lb. You can even buy new springs or a new trigger.

First see what you have. You might have an adjustable trigger already. Also, weigh the trigger yourself and see if it's actually 3lb 15oz. It might actually weigh more or less.

You would be able to shoot in the NRA matches, I have not had my trigger weighed in any of those, but for a leg match with the CMP they would weigh the trigger and you would not be able to shoot the leg match, at the larger matches they will also weigh the Garand, Springfield, Carbine, Vintage, etc. rifles before the competition.
