State Trooper Shot, Suspect Caught

A Michigan State Police trooper patrolling Benton Harbor as a response to last week's rioting was shot in the arm early today.

The trooper, who was taken to a hospital with an injury described as non-life-threatening, was shot several blocks away from where the riots happened, state police Lt. Michael Risko said.

He said the unit was on patrol in the city because of the riots, but "I'm pretty sure (the shooting) has nothing to do with the incident" last week.

"They were there to make sure we had enough presence to keep things quiet, which they have been and still are," Risko said.

The trooper got out of his car around 4:15 a.m. to investigate an incident and was shot in the arm. Police have a suspect in custody.

Risko would not elaborate on why he thought the shooting was unrelated to the riots, saying the investigation was continuing.

Hundreds of residents in the predominantly black city of 12,000 rioted for two nights last week after the death of a black motorcyclist, Terrance Shurn. Shurn, 27, was killed in a crash June 16 as he was being chased by white township police.

At least 21 homes were destroyed, several people were injured and several police and fire vehicles were damaged.

A beefed-up police presence essentially halted the unrest after two nights.

Uh huh. It had nothing to do with the incident last week. It was probably some citizen target practicing and had a flier.
