I was trying to mount a new Leupold scout scope on my 1894 rifle, and just discovered that the Warne 2 piece bases make the scope too close to my eye. If I could slide it further away about 2 inches that would be great, but not with the Warne 2 piece base and rings I purchased.

I was looking at the one piece bases with a picatinny rail, such as this:http://www.midwayusa.com/product/188149/xs-lever-scout-scope-mount-weaver-style-marlin-336-matte?cm_vc=ProductFinding

I see it might need some fitting, gunsmith installation, etc. Or, with the standard Warne rings and bases I have, could I just use a standard scope on the 1894? I thought that the lever action needed a "scout" style long eye relief scope, but unfortunately, it seems like the way the mount works I would have been better off with a standard scope? I am comparing the numbers now on the Leupold scout, which lists eye relief at 6.9-6.1 in, whereas their 3-9x scope needs 4.7-3.7. I think that the scope and be mounted to move a little closer to my eye no problem (had it all the way in the ring forward) and between that and needing 2 inches LESS eye relief it looks like the standard scope is what I need.

Thanks for any advice. I was really looking forward to shooting the gun scoped, and now we are back to the drawing board!

If you are talking about an 1894 Marlin, (side eject) you need a standard scope to mount it on top of the receiver and have proper eye relief.

If you are talking about an 1894 Winchester?
You need a scout mount and long eye-relief 'Scout scope to move it ahead of the top ejecting action.

It sounds like you have a 1894 Marlin, and the right base, & rings.
But you bought the wrong scope.

Can you return or exchange the scope for one with standard eye relief?

That would be way preferable to cobbling up a pict rail on top of a lever action.

If you have to go that way?
Go this way.

Thanks RC! I was thinking about it all night, and I realize I messed up and confused the two. Yes, I have a Marlin 1894, and as I was turning it over in my head, I realize I need a standard scope. I will try and return it to Midway and get myself a nice 3-9x. That way I can develop my loads more precisely, and still have the option of of a wider field of view if I ever hunt with it.

Off to MidwayUSA!

Thanks again

New scope, different problem!

So I put on the regular. Leupold VX-2 3-9x scope, and I can't seem to get it adjusted high enough. I was able to get on paper, and the windage is ok, but I can't raise it up enough. At 50 and 100 they are falling about 4-6 inches too low, and the scope is adjusted all the way in elevation.

I was shooting both 180 gr 44 Special loads, as well as 44 Mag 240 gr almost full power. I know I have load development work to do, because the 240s are bevel base and likely going too fast for 100yds, but even the specials which grouped nicely at 50 yds with a peep sight are all running low.

I am using the Warne bases and their detachable medium height rings. I can't use lower rings because the scope bell would hit the buckhorn sight. I was also hoping to be able to share the scope with my 357 lever as well.

Any thoughts on how to fix the problem now?

Thanks!

If you bought that base you brought up in your first post, make sure "forward" is forward.

If you got two piece bases follow post #6 if you're absolutely sure they're mounted correctly.

Very, very seldom do "correct" scope bases need shimmed, it's usually some other issue.

Sorry, I should have read your last post more carefully.
Shimming is still not usual.
Make sure they're on correctly before shimming.

It doesn't make any difference where it was made by whom.

Let's not over-complicate this deal with nit-picking, O.K.!

If the scope does't have enough elevation adjustment to zero?
You have to adjust the bases by shimming under the rear one.
Simple as that.

Assuming you have the Warne two-piece bases like this?
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/15...pe-base-marlin-36-336-444-1894-1895-9-45-922m

They are, or should be the same, because the Marlin receiver is perfectly flat on top.

Shim under the rear one to tilt the front of the scope down on the receiver.
That will make it shoot higher until you zero it again.

I don't think Marlin made too many with the problems that Remington did barrel droop included.I made the mistake of buying A Remington made Marlin shortly after the change so I know About some of the problems. They seem to be getting better so if its sev ere maybe a trip back to Remington would be in order.
