I would like to remove the 2 piece base set from my Marlin MR-7 and put a one piece base like a picatinny so I can mount my scope a little closer to my eye as I have to stretch my neck now when shooting from a bench. The problem is, the bases and rings both have torx head screws and so far, I have partially stripped one of the ring screws trying to torque to 25"lbs. and also one of the base screws. The base screws don't want to budge and I'm afraid I'll either strip the heads all out or maybe even break a screw off in the receiver. The rifle is a Marlin MR-7 30-06 made in 1996 so I suspect, the base screws may have been in for years. Any advice on removing them would be greatly appreciated. I don't have Kroil to soak them with but do have BreakFree CLP or, would I be better to have a smith remove them? I just want to use a picatinny base and Burris sig. Zee rings so I can mount my scope further toward the rear closer to my eye. I think this is the bases that are on here now. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/62...mount-standard-scope-base-winchester-70-matte

It sounds like the screws were put in with LocTite on the threads. If so, het will soften it anl allow the screws to move. A soldering gun held to the screw head for a minute or so will soften the thread locker. Easier to control than a propane torch.
I have not stripped any torx screws but did my share of Allen heads. The recess in the head makes it easy to drill them, in a drill press of course. Use a #31 or 1/8" bit. The head will pop off when drilled through, leaving enough stub to grab with vise grips after the scope base is out of the way.

1. Big soldering iron, or tiny gas torch tip heat on the screw heads in case they are red lock-tighted in.
Heat till they smoke.

2. Put a Torx bit in each screw and whack them real good with a hammer to jar the threads loose.

3. If that don't work, drill them out.

I thought about drilling the heads out but I have a 100 watt soldering gun and a 40 watt pencil iron not sure if either will get hot enough though I'm not worried about damaging the bases though as I don't plan on using them again. Thanks! :)

I drilled the heads off lifted the bases and screwed the screws out with my fingers and no locktite? What a deal, I guess I should have put a little Break Free around the screw heads. :D
