Trouble seating AK bullets with a very deep cannelure

I'm trying to make my first batch of AK rounds. Everything has been fine up to the point of seating the bullet, but the bullet has a really deep cannelure.

The seating depth I'm using puts the case mouth right over the cannelure but because it's so deep the mouth doesn't hold onto it and the bullet sinks another .030" into the case neck (where the cannelure ends).

The result is that I can only seat the bullet to deep or too shallow. I can't crimp it in the right spot because once the bullet is seated to the depth of the cannelure, it just falls into the case neck until it gets to the un-cannelured part of the projectile.

The bullets themselves are, I believe, some of the old/discontinued Hornady 123gr, .310" FMJs. Anyone know what I can do? I would think that the case neck should be holding onto the lower part of the bullet, even if the very tip of the mouth is a few thousandths wider than the cannelure, but obviously not.

Any advice would be appreciated!

How wide are the bullets andwhat decapper/sizer are you using? I use the Hornady 123gr FMJ and SP, and I use the .310 sizer/decapper. If those are .3105, they should slide in. Are you using the Lee Factory Crimp Die? I have to use that often with jacketed bullets in 7.62x39mm, works like a charm. make sure it's out to where you want it, and crimp away, a medium to light crimp keeps them from spinning.

Oops! Bullets are .310". I'm using the .310 decap/sizer (the die originally came with the .308" in it, but I switched it out).

I do have the FCD, but as I said, by the time it gets to that operation, the bullet is "seated" too deep (but I can freely move the bullet up/down for the length of the cannelure). I don't want to crimp the bullet when the OAL is too short.

Hmm, sounds like you should change to the .3105 sized bullets. If you are using a single stage, you can move the bullet up to the right spot then use the FCD. Also, .03 isn't that much a huge deal COAL wise, unless your rifle is pretty picky. It can happen. Then just slide the bullet up finger wise and ram it into the Lee FCD to keep it there.
