True Bargain Stories

After losing one of my faves, a stainless Ruger Old Army cap and ball, in a burglery, I was running around to the pawn shops looking for the guns I'd gotten stolen. On a lark, I stopped into a gun shop in a nearby town. He had a blued version of the gun, an Old Army, had one little rust spot on the barrel barely detectable and had a price tag on it that said "97.98" I says, "is THAT the price you want on that thing?" "Yeah", he says. "I'm getting rid of all my black powder stuff and just wanna get rid of it, to which I whipped out my wallet. :D It shoots as good as my old stainless one, but I sorta miss the stainless. I could just bring it home, take out the cylinder, and stick the works in the dish washer. Made for less PITA clean up. :D But, at that price, even if I still had my stainless gun, I'd have bought it!:what:

Old Armys are fantastic cap and ball guns. They can handle some soup 'em up by boring the cylinders some and almost make a Walker Colt out of 'em (though I haven't, yet), plus they're as accurate as most cartridge guns. You could even handgun hunt with an Old Army, though I've yet to do that. Don't need brass, either!:D Loading up is sort of a chore, though. I could just imagine the crackhead that broke into my house trying to figure out how to stuff ammo into it. LOL. He's probably still trying to figure out what ammo to buy for it.

First - Sorry to hear about your loss.

My Stainless ROA was a great deal from an auction. Picked it up NIB for $250. I don't shoot it as much as I'd like just because of the cleaning and I can't use it in CAS because it's an adjustable sight model. Still, I love owning it.

A very nice stainless .44 Bulldog (I know I know but it's a good one, not a Charco!) $165 at a local gun shop.

Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8" .41mag in excellent condition except for a lot of lead in the barrel $200 at the last Hriam Maxim Machine Gun Shoot. Scrubbed out the barrel and the gun is like new.

My Dad gets some good ones - a like-new Winchester Model 94 Trapper .30-30 for $75 a couple of years ago and a Marlin 1892 octogan barrel .32 rimfire/center fire he bought at a pawn shop in L.A. in 1964 for $30. He sold it at a gun show the other day for $600 and the guy he sold it to is probably bragging on the deal somewhere now.

Remington Model 8 in 35 Remington, about 90% with gorgeous wood for $200 (8 yrs ago)
S&W Mdl 19-4, holster wear, but a GREAT shooter $225 (2 yrs ago)
Savage 311 12 ga ($135) traded it for a Marlin 336CS in 35 Remington in 95% condition (Awsome shooter, too)

Ran across a 4", pre 29 S&W in the classifieds in a small town 45 min. from where I live. It's probably 95%+. Cost me 325.00 3 mos. ago.

How do you guys get such great deals at pawn shops? I find pawn shop guns at STUPID prices most of the time. Is it just patience? Do you visit the shops frequently or something?

I got this Colt .22LR commerative "Wyatt Earp" from their Lawman Series in an even swap for a 600 MHz Dell Desktop about 3 years ago.

NIB 6-shot 617 with laminated wood target grips for $300 in a private sale.

I also purchased a very decent cz52 for $115, and it came with a spare 9mm barrel.

I got a winchester 1300, with chokes and minty glossy furniture, in exchange for a turkish mauser and a few stainless steel crap swords that I was going to yard sale out for nothing anyway. This was only two months ago.

S&W nickle pre-10 (made 1946) at a yard sale a couple of years ago - $110
Ruger Single Six (made 1973) with both cylinders at a yard sale a couple of years ago - $150
Colt Trooper .22 - $160 (this was about 15 years ago).
Marlin 39A - $125
Remington 1100 - $80

And many more over the years but I must say that the deals aren't out there like they used to be (or maybe I'm just slowing down)
