Trying to pick out a revolver!

Ruger Speed Six in .357 mag. & stainless gets my vote but may be hard to find for $400.00 as it seems everyone wants them these days. A used S&W 64 & 65 will be cheaper and much easier to find and are excellent revolvers.

I'm a ruger fan when it comes to revolvers. SP-101 if you'll carry it. GP-100 if you won't (or you're a big dude and don't mind carrying a heavy ass gun).

I am a big dude, but don't wanna carry a heavy ass gun, lol! I'm really leaning towards a 642 right now, just wanna make sure the price is right. They want $399 for it, brand new, does that sound too far off? I really like the feel of the Ruger LCR, just not sure that I'm confident enough that the bugs are worked out quite yet. So, that's where I'm at, deciding between the LCR and the 642. I don't think I can do bad either way, both feel good and both are $399.

The thing is, at first I thought I would just carry it every now and then, but I'm really warming up to the idea of carrying it often. It won't replace the G27 I'm sure, but I can see like a 60/40 carry situation, I'm kinda hooked on the wheel guns right now....

I'm not sure about the shipping, but it's at Midwest Gun Exchange in Mishawaka, IN. Phone number is 574-257-0020 if you wanna give them a shout.

Hold up. Do you want to enjoy shooting this revolver at the range? If so, drop the 442/642/LCR right off your list instantly. They are not fun to shoot. They're almost painful. The smallest revolver that you'll actually enjoy shooting with even standard pressure .38spl is really a SP-101.

I have a G27 as well. I can shoot it all day. After a couple cylinders, I'm done with my 442, and put it away.

It would definitely see some range time for sure, but ease of carry would be more of a concern to me than some discomfort at the range I think, maybe I'm wrong though.....

Just know what you're getting into. Not only will the 442/642 be uncomfortable at the range, but they have truly atrocious triggers, so you won't even be very accurate. The LCR has a nicer trigger, for what it's worth.

I'd go for a SP-101 with a real hammer. It won't be painful at the range, and you'll be able to shoot it in SA mode at the range for fun.

I own a few J frames including a M642 which I carry daily. I don't find the M642 painful or even uncomfortable to shoot with even the most stout .38 Special +P ammo. I wouldn't worry about shooting it at the range, it's really a non-issue IMO.

Here is my carry M642 wearing Badger Custom Rosewood grips:

I am not a 642 fan myself, I like hammers. But if you are OK with hammerless it's a good choice. I think you would probably like any used S&W you could get in that price range, also.....

I don't like the new Ruger design.... maybe just my prejudice.

Higher price = more satisfaction

I hate to suggest higher prices to anybody in these times, but if you are new to revolvers, and are thinking about one for carry, I would suggest going with a larger frame revolver than a snubbie for your first revolver.

Now I am the exact opposite. 30+ years of shooting revolvers and I just got my first 1911-style two years ago.

The reason I suggest a larger frame is this. A snubbie already has a short sight radius and will have a smaller grip than any auto but a .25. It takes a lot of practice to get good with them.

A good K-frame size gun can still be concealed fairly well, can be learned pretty easy, and will digest a wide variety of ammunition from low-powered practice to higher power duty-type loads.

Most guns in this size can be found for $500.00 if you look around. Gunbroker will have deals from time to time on Model 10's and 13's or Ruger GP's. Either way would be a good way to go. If you want adjustable sights, there is the Model 15 Smith or Model 19 or 66 in .357 Mag. I forget the Ruger sighted medium frame number, but you get the idea.

The Doc is out now.

If you're not going to carry it a whole lot I'd do with a DW Model 15. It has interchangeable barrels from 2in up to 10in iirc. Great shooter.
