This applies to anyone in Tucson, AZ. I was up at Redington pass a couple weeks ago and USFS came up to me and said that they were going to close down the shooting range. Can anyone verify this for me??? I haven't heard anything. Id like to go up there soon but don't want to drive 45 min for no reason. Anyone know anything??? Thx.

First, I didn't know there was a "Shooting Range" in Redington Pass.

On the other hand, silly person that I am I thought "public land" ment it was open to the public for any leagal use. Of course the Forrest Service has been trying to correct that impression for some time now.

Ok, let me clarify... its not a "range". But there are certain areas in which you can shoot. There are areas that have been deemed outlets in which firearm discharging is legal... (you have to go about 3 miles up road coming from the tanque verde side). I checked on Tucsonshooting.com too and didnt see anything either so I was curious if it just hadnt been updated. Where in the desert do you guys go shooting??? I know three points but Id rather go somewhere either not as far or less populated. But yea, forest service came by and told me that redington was on the chopping block and to spread the word.

I haven't been shooting up at Redington Pass since I was a kid, but I was actually thinking of going up there this weekend.

The Forest Service can close an area supposedly "to protect public safety or for other good reason." But the only National Forest land I know of that is actually closed is the tubing area on the Salt, the Superstitions, and Sabino Canyon where you can't even carry now. even with a CCW.

I wouldn't be surprised if the local Coronado management was planning on trying to close Reddington without public notice. These are the same people that faked the report to close the Tucson Rod and Gun Club range.

You can call the Forest Service to find out what's really up, or to complain about this apparent plan to make Reddington a gun-free zone.

Their number is 520-670-4832. Their office is in the Federal building downtown at 300 W. Congress.

Also if you don't mind, maybe you could PM me with directions to the "shooting range" up there before they close it ;)
