...or this old fart moved quicker than he thought...

Anyway we all know about the Tueller drill and most have trained in defence. So I'm xxx miles from home, but I'm legal to CCW here (mulitple permits are handy). I'm with an attorney, discussing a case and we are about to exit a restaurant. So I see this guy punch this attractive lady in the face!! A little girl is about 4 is crying and can't get her breath, this dude is about 8-10 yds away and reaches for beer bottle with one hand and has this lady by her wrist. The attorney says - (well for forum sake)- "oh crap!....noooo....did ya know a green hard vinyl ledger that holds a single legal pad to the adams apple will make a 200# man let go and release his grip? He will also writher on the ground, speechless and not make trouble.

Ex husband has been stalking wife, waits for her to exit where she and daughter went to enjoy mexican food. LEO shows up and gets the skinny and yep, there is a restraining order, they have been divorced for 2 years. LEO and attorney discuss situation I calm little girl down. LEO is about my age and with ID he asks humm, I understand your "legal" here. "Yep" I reply. "You covered that distance before he could hit again with the bottle?". "Yep, kinda suprised this old fart too". Laughed he said , "you know that makes me think I need to practice that Tueller drill again more myself."

No problem for me, gave my story, attorney's too. I asked the LEO to keep tabs and make sure they get home, and suggested the lady consider self defence, the officer invited her to attend some CCW classes in the event she wants to get a CCW-he just happens to know a place and his wife participates. I bought the little girl cheese dip and chips, and punch and a dumb doll in the mexican joint, got a kiss on the cheek and a smile. The mom gives me a hug, and handshake /invite to vist the range if I'm in town long enough from LEO.

Well kinda blew the theory on low profile I was going for, the case is exposing me than I want anyway, as a witness for prosecution. Oh Had to get another ledger, I must have hit a wee bit harder than thought, umm I bent it, it cracked, it broke...oops. but the dude couldn't answer any questions, I think a medical stop before the pokey was planned.

So maybe not the best or smartest method...it worked.

You handled it perfectly!

You used what you had at hand to respond immediately to control the situation without using too much force. If the effort had not neutralized the threat to the woman and child you could have then resorted to using your handgun.

It is natural to "Monday Morning Quarterback" your own actions and be overly critical. The fact that you acted and did so in a way that handled the situation without using your trump card is sufficient.

Quick update while we take a lunch break (ain't laptops and internet great!):D

Earlier we take a recess, there is the lady, her dad and the girl. She has decided to take a CCW class, has wanted to, and now, no excuse for putting it off. She was going to keep her old wedding ring, it's now on consignment, she figures the sentimental value and giving to daughter is well-not a good idea. So she will take her class tomorrow, and wait on buying a gun as I suggested she should.See what she is best with first and learn safety Her dad is supporting her, as he has a CCW. Little girl gets to see Eddie Eagle and get some good positive education about firearms.

So the ring gets sold and the money for CCW class, fees, gun, ammo, and training. Funny how stuff works out huh?

later...

pax,
you tell anybody my heart-strings got pulled seeing that mom get hit and that little 4 year old having to see this, crying and so upset she couldn't breath...I'll deny it.

If you relate how happy to see her take a class, educate the child about guns and safety, and take personal responsiblity, I admit it.

And if a certain kid got sick on cheese dip and hyper from sweet punch...to get her mind off the situation...well I've been accused of worse decisions :p

After I have used the Tueller Drill to teach my CCW students, I use it to teach me.

Because of what I know from the Tueller Drill, I realize that I am armed to the teeth as long as I have an object to strike or stab with and the awareness to take advantage of the situation.

I teach at a college, and carrying any sort of firearm on campus is A) against my state's laws and B) reason for immediate dismissal from my job.

Yeah, yeah, don't get me started about how STUPID both the state law and my college's policies are .

But, if a disgruntled wacko does appear in the doorway of my classroom with a gun, I have a good chance of taking him out with something before he can get a shot off.

I'm a big guy, 6-4 and 290. I played several sports in high school, and know how to move a little.

If I grab that 14 inch thick unabridged dictionary off the table, or the wooden lectern, or a chair and rush the wacko, I have a chance of winning.

If I scare the wacko badly enough, chances are very good that he might not even get a shot off. Or if he does, it will probably be only one shot that is likely to miss or hit in a non-lethal area.

I also keep things that aren't weapons handy. Scissors, hammers, screwdrivers, large books, eating utensils. As long as I have one of those and the wakco with a gun is six yards or less away, I have a chance.

A chance is much better than no chance.

Maybe it's a weird thing that I think this way someties.

But then again, folks have referred to me as a paranoid hillbilly before.

I too love happy endings. Had something similar happen in the late 80's. I didn't have a tactical clip board though. The woman who was assaulted promptly ripped me a new one for putting her boyfriend on the ground. Wouldn't press charges, and she went home with him. Lessons learned the hard way I guess. I'd do the same thing in a similar situation again. MN had no CCW then, I used my fist and a well placed kick.

Ya done good. Very good.

Quite often, the thing that you can do RIGHT NOW that's not perfect will beat out what's optimum two seconds from now. I've made tactical errors in a roughly similar situation, and what let me get away with it was IMMEDIATE action before the opposition could sort out what was up.

That's a big part of what happened in this case, and with the Tueller drill in general.

At present, without CCW, I'm relegated to cutlery. And you bet I know (and practice) getting to it and counter-attacking. About a year ago I got between a guy and his small dog on a leash, and two large aggressive stray dogs. I crossed the street at a dead run, and don't specifically recall drawing. It was pure "muscle memory" without having to think about it.

And that's why I prefer having my own knife on me - one I trust, and know, and is carried the same way in the same sheath at the same position anytime I've got pants on (and bedside otherwise).

Everyone, I really appreciate the feedback, I mean that.
I have re-read your posts and taken to heart the comments.
I did what I usually do after something like this occurs, first I'm grateful, how it ended up, including my physical, legal, being. Then I get angry and shakey and have to just "go through it", then I have the "what ifs".

I'm here for an unpleasant reason, basically if the court had done the right thing years ago this whole thing would not be happening. I was "close" to the situation "the first time around". This recent incident that happened, well, "cut a bit close to home" you might say.

I guess from all this its easy to conclude -for most of us - a few things.

-Think and be aware of situations around you,the brain is a tool.
-Improvise, Adapt, Overcome. Tricked out toys that go bang, bells, whistles and "stuff" touted are not always going to be what saves your bacon...as pax says..."get training for the brain".
-Unfortunatly procrastination, complacency will get you hurt (or worse), this lady was lucky, she had been wanting to get training...but...but put it off and had excuses. Sad many wait until an incident to them or close others before they do something about it--sometimes its too late.
-Jim, your a good example of one whom can't CCW, but takes personal responsibility. Read: it ain't the guns-its the mindset, thanks.

I get to wrap up my business here on a GOOD note. :D I'm going to stop in and see how the CCW goes for her, and see her dad, daughter, and LEO while there. Then I need to get my butt home, classes start Monday.
I have to travel through mumbley something states , and will do so at night -its cooler traveling at night, less traffic. I'll do a straight thru...LEO's if you see a cobalt blue "getting home" ...let me "get" -please ;)
"ain't gonna catch the midnight rider" is an Allman Bros., song not a motto, ok I just like my old time rock and roll...yeah, umm think they bought it... ;)

Good Job !
Most interesting is that in spite (or because) of carrying a gun, you reacted with an efficient physical response that ended the situation. No blood, no extended fight, one hit.
Good thing, just consider the effect on the little girl if she had to witness her ""daddy"" getting shot.

More proof it is the player, not the instrument. I hope that if I am ever in a similar situation, I can react as well.
The only down side to your incident: Now they may want to ban legal pads on airplanes!

You, sir get a Gold Star!
