Hi, my name is Philip, I am from Colorado Springs, and this is my first (non introductory) post on THR. I have a question about Tulammo primers. I have a contact who has a boat load of Tula standard and magnum large pistol primers. He also has Tula and CCI magnum primers. I have heard in the past the Tula can be inconsistent, but, want to get some more opinions since the price is right. He is asking $15/K for each size. I will be loading for .380 auto for my wife, can the magnum primers be used? I have a nice stock of large pistol primers, but, might take a chance on those, too. I was informed they are really not "magnum" per se, but simply perform better in adverse conditions. Is it true most military cartridges have magnum primers?
Thank you, Philip

I use SB and tula and any other primer for practice pistol loads. I have never had any issues with either one used in practice pistol loads. Walmart charges 39 bucks per thousand on cci. Cabelas is a little more on those, but their SB usually runs about 23 bucks per thousand.

You can use mag primers in non mag loads. Not a problem at all if you work up the load using them and are not hotrodding them at max pressure. I have done it many times with no trouble in pistol and rifle cartridges.

Fwiw at 15 per k and no hazmat, I would buy all I could. Pistol ammo goes fast if you shoot a lot!

I would not use a Mag primer on the small 380 acp. There is so little volume the explosiveness of the compound may impact how the powder burns. The mag primer has enough force to drive the bullet well into the rifling without any powder. Then if one is not playing attention fire another round behind it would not be good.

I agree, I would not use a magnum primer in a .380 ACP case either. The volume is so small slight changes increase pressures, sometimes by a lot.

Revolver cases on the other hand are a totally different story. The volume is so large you hardly notice the difference, especially if you are not at the top end of the pressure range.

Most use S+B from Cabelas on sale for pistol but used a lot of Tula SRM in .223 no issues.
.380 needs SP primers so the large ones won't do you any good.
I tend to agree with others about the mag primers in .380, probably best not to.

Thank you fellas. I appreciate the input. Will grab three or four K standard while the getting is good. redbullitt, I will still get the CCI magnum SP, but, I think I will save them for later until I get more experience. Maybe use them for .45acp if I find SP 45 brass?

You're showing great restraint...or we have different definitions of a boat load :D I think of a boat load as something around 100k

The last time I had access to a great price on primers, I bought all they had...it was only 20k. The next month they restocked, but I only got another 15k.

I think you are sitting pretty good as far as price goes. I've never used Tula but for shooting paper,or plates, just for fun I would be willing to try them at the price. I am fond of CCI primers and the reliable ignition you have when you use them. Don't let your friend tell other handloaders about them. Buy them and trade them for what you need. After going through droughts in the past I have become a hoarder of things. I would already have them in hand myself.
Truthfully I have plenty of primers at present too.
Why does shortages and panic buying by others cause one to become a hoarder, I don't know.
Good luck happy and safe loading and shooting.

How old are these primers and do you know how they were stored? Before you buy a boat load of anything, it would be prudent to test a sample to make sure they perform reliably. Report of Tula primers being inconsistent was with SP standard primers with thicker cups. As far as I know, there has not been problems with LP primers.

As to Tula SP primers, I would stay away from them as we have not received updated report from THR members of their reliability and all online vendors stopped selling them. As others posted, I would not use SP magnum primers for 380Auto.

But at $15/K, I would be OK using Tula LP/LPM primers for 45ACP target loads for punching paper.

Many of us stocked up on S&B primers this year when Cabela's sold them at $19.99/K with free shipping and Cabela's currently lists them at $21.99/K with free shipping and they have been reliable - http://www.cabelas.com/product/SELLIER-BELLOT-PRIMERS-BRICK/2002898.uts

I tried the S&B SP primers in my light .38 Spl target load with Berrys 148 Gr HBWC and they shot very well. I tried them in my "plinker" 9MM load with a 124 Gr plated and they needed .1 more Gr powder.

Magnum primers are about the powder used. The cartridge makes no difference. Wouldn't load .380 ACP(don't have a .380 pistol and it'd be evil here anyway. snicker.), but certainly would not use magnum primers.

Linux,
Thanks for the input (imput?) from you and the other THRers, I'm gonna only get the LP. I don't want to have large and small 45acp just so I can keep it simple. I have a nice stash of Federal LP and will wait for the sale at Cabelas to get more. Good shooting, filster
