Tuner,

I shot 130rds of Winchester White Box 230gr through my new Kimber TLE II with internal extractor. I was using Wilson 47D 8rd mags. In the first 50 rds I had two FTE's. I continued to shoot I had no more FTE's. As, I approached 75 rds I got 3 FTFeed . It was the next to last round in the mag. that was the problem except for the third round. The last FTFeed, the round was sitting on top of the mag and was the last round in the mag. The last 30 rds. went flawless. I am not planning on doing anything to the weapon until I shoot another 200rds. I just wanted to know if this was a progressive break in situation that is working itself out. Your help is appreciated as always, by the way the weapon was dead on accurate, way better than me.

Thanks

Howdy Featherweight.

The FTEs...failure to extract or failure to eject? Ejection problem is probably not enough extractor tension. Most factory Kimbers could use a little more. Failure to eject could be extractor tension or short-cycle malfunction...and probably caused by the recoil spring rate too high.
Grip the gun tighter. If the problem goes away, the slide is probably oversprung. If it's just a little too tight, it will loosen up with use.

The failures to feed are probably the magazine...and the one that left the
round loose on top is due to the round jumping the mag. It usually happens on the last round, but can happen on the next to last round too,
and the problem is a weak mag spring.

It can show up in one of two ways...Either the last round jumps the follower and the slide locks back with the last round loos on top....OR...
the next to last round jumps the mag and ejects from the port, and the last round goes to battery. This problem can be aggravated by a too-heavy recoil spring.

Go ahead and shoot it another 200 times. Pay attention to your grip, and
let us know how it does. We'll go from there.

Luck!

Thanks Tuner. I will keep you posted. It sounds like two distinctive problems. 1. extractor 2. A bad mag. Is this common with brand new Wilson's?

I will grip it tighter. I do catch myself from time to time getting comfortable firing, breathing and relaxing to try and overcome recoil anticipation and trigger jerking. So many things to remember in trying to do a simple thing correctly.

Yep, if I limp-wrist my TLE, it will do the same thing. Happens to me all the time in IDPA on my first stage of the day. Not sure how to fix if it is indeed limp-wristing except to hold it tighter.

Bad Mags?

Howdy Featherweight,

I don't know if I could hang "bad" on the 47Ds because of poor performance in one pistol, because some shooters report flawless function with'em in their guns, while others have nothing but bad things to say. It's
just a matter of how that particular gun does with that particular type of magazine...or even one particular magazine. I've seen 3 47Ds run like grease thru a goose, and a 4th one puke like a buzzard...and all 4 mags were bought new on the same day from the same place. Some pistols like'em...Some don't. It's the same story with any magazine, and particularly the various 8-round styles. If you just have to go with an 8-round magazine, the McCormick Powermags seem to be the best of the bunch in any given pistol...mainly due to the strong springs. Wolff
extra-power springs may very well cure what ails the magazines, if the
magazines are indeed the problem. The Wilson-Rogers design takes a
proprietary spring, and a standard spring won't work without modification
to fit the followers correctly...so keep that in mind if you order springs for'em.

Standin' by...
