Went out this morning with my buddy Casey, he just acquired a Foxpro Scorpion and he still hasn't been able to get his new AR bloody. I got one on the first stand, she came in at 6 min. I guess she cruised right by Casey at like 40 yards, but it was too thick for a shot. He whooped at her a few times but she kept moving. Casey's whoops were right in pitch with the foxpro, sounded kind of like that little beep you get with walkie talkies, y'all know that electronic blip sound I'm talking about??? Anyway, at the six minute mark that's what I thought was happening, and was seriously thinking "oh I bet Casey's pissed that his caller is making that racket"...and a dog popped out between me and the caller, maybe 12 yards from me. She saw me get my rifle up so she turned and started leaving straight away. She couldn't outrun a bullet though ;) It wasn't until she was all piled up that I realized what the sound really was.

Next 4-5 stands were dry.

Last stand was perfect. We were set up in open stuff at about 9am by now. There was a thick brushy draw, and we sat on either side. At about 8 minutes I could see a cow looking hard into the draw, but I couldn't see in. Sure enough a minute later it was on my side of the hill, focused on the sound. Sneaking in, turns out he could see the truck shining behind us, but was coming right to me. He even put his head down for a minute for me to get my rifle on him, so he never even saw me. I waited a small while hoping Casey would see him but he was a little behind the rise and I had a picture perfect shot...so he died. Couldn't have been more perfect. Maybe 50 yards. Sure as shootin'.
The dog in my left hand was a big male, way bigger than the female.

Anyway it was a good time, hopefully we saved some calves and fawns. Clark, if you're reading we'll have to hit 'em hard over the break. You still need to get one, and you're due!

Great pics. That male looks huge.

I am sick of having to tell people that I have made like 30 stands and still haven't seen a live coyote. We gotta get out soon.

Big <...> dog there. By the way... What do you do with the meat, coat and carcass after a hunt?

There is still a fur market and coyote pelts are worth something if they're good ones and prepared properly.

I checked about 6 months ago when this discussion came up. Someone posted a price list for furs. Turns out, that price list was from Russia. They still have a fur market over there. I got a price list off a local buyer in a town a couple counties over and the price listed for coyote pelts was a big fat ZERO. Only thing on that list worth a drive to Wharton for was Bobcat. They brought something like 30 bucks. Back in the day, they were golden.

Well, I haven't checked 2009 prices, but they were selling for a good bit a couple of years ago...

Apparently prices are down this year and they may actually be zero in your area but from what I can tell you can still sell them for something (maybe not much) in many areas.

MCGunner nailed it. I'm considering taking a thigh for tacos some day...I've got a buddy who's curious as well. I saved the one good pelt I got last year, turned out ok. LOTS of time involved though. Pelts in southern AZ are pretty crappy all year. No color and not very thick. Up north they're better this time of year. If I could find a buyer of whole coyotes I'd sell 'em to help pay for gas. Carcass goes to the birds and other coyotes. Wish they'd put a bounty back on 'em, deer herd is lousy out this way. Too much predation.

Darn shame to waste the meat.
The pelts, I'd clean and prepare and keep for my own use.
If someone would pay for them, great, otherwise, make nice wall hangings or quilted together, a warm blanket for reading time...
Waste not, want not.
Don't let them go to waste. If you kill something not in self defense, make use of it.
Hmm, wonder what Coyote jerky would taste like.
Try it.
I may if I get the chance to take one.

If you say so. Maybe its good, maybe it's terrible. Looks like neither one of us know yet. I'll tell you one thing, the animal reeks. Wait till you get one down. Like I said I'm gonna try it one of these days, probably tacos. You never know...also I'd prepare it another way than jerky. My guess is that you'd wanna make sure it's cooked all the way, coyotes have a much higher disease rate than beef or deer. That's my advice anyway.

Also it's not going to waste completely. Other animals eat them, including other coyotes. I know over there in colorado you guys have plenty of deer so I know it's hard to understand, but here in AZ we have a lousy deer herd. Been going downhill ever since they lifted the bounties on coyotes and lions. Coyotes run rampant all over the state and are pests. All you need is a hunting license, and you can shoot them year round and there's no limit. I'm not doing anything illegal.

Go for it. I thought the same thing myself when I started. Like I said I did that with one, the only one with a decent pelt. It came out ok, but it's a lot of work. Especially when you don't know what you're doing. Also it isn't cold down here in the desert and most of the pelts are pretty lousy. Up in colorado i'm sure they are pretty prime this time of year. Yeah, coyote pelts are neat, I'm sure I'll tan more in the future. 100 bucks says you'll give up on it before you tan enough hides for a quilt, then sew them together and hem the edges:rolleyes:

How about you do it your way and I'll do it my way. Then we can both be friends and not dicker at each other on the internet. This is a free country last I checked. I'm not breaking any laws. Slogan for gun owners(which we both must be) goes something like "don't tread on me"...ring any bells? It's kinda sad to leave 'em lay but I don't have time to tan every hide. If y'all want to discuss the ethics of coyote hunting start another post about it, but lets not crap in my post any more eh? I guess I'll stop posting coyote pics on this forum in the meantime.

Love seeing a dead coyote, good job. As a past taxidermist I can tell you coyotes
stink. No way I would want to eat one, I don't eat carp either, but have seen people
who will eat it....anyway, it takes alot of washing an scent cleaner to get the smell out
of the coyotes I've seen, best to send the pelts to a tannery in my opnion.

I guess each to their own. Me personally, I'm not eating a coyote as long as there is plenty else for me to eat. Still shoot every one I get a chance to, and have never felt bad about waste...always felt like I was preventing poaching on the deer herd.

IMHO nothing goes to waste in nature. You have just slightly adjusted the food chain. Scavengers will feast for a bit, and a few fawns will survive.

So far 14 yote stands over 2 years and zero shots! My calling is getting better so 2010 will be MY year!! :D

good shooting, nail them devils. they have no natural predators to thin them out. 'yotes have moved into North and South Calinky and spreading fast, they are in this area and playing havoc with the whitetail population. and even jumping tied-out dogs and other home animals.

Just keep at it, you'll get one. Gotta be still and gotta be watching. I only blow for 15-20 seconds usually then stop to watch, then blow again. Can't get 'em if you don't see 'em or if they see you first. Good luck!
