This was the year I was planning on being judicious about my purchases. Had even considered not even buying a firearm this year.
Well, I have a nearly new Ruger 10/22 - basic one, synthetic stock and stainless barrel - I picked up off Texas Gun Trader. Purchased a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 3-9x40 scope for it.
Then this week, purchased a Savage .17 MHR bolt-action rifle. Another basic gun. Synthetic stock, heavy barrel. I found a Sweet 17 3-12x40 scope for it.
My 10/22 is sitting at my son's house and I have not retrieved it, nor shot it.
I just spent an afternoon installing a scope on the Savage. It was a windy day and did not get to shoot the gun, but it definitely has a nice feel.
Plan to take an afternoon off this week and try the Savage out. The .17 MHR cartridge intrigues me and am looking forward to seeing how it shoots.

You are on your way to an even dozen (or a baker's dozen, just for fun)!

I've been "judicious" so far this year, but that is more about being broke (new-to-me home is taking all my $) and the fact that I decided to sit out this recent panic. But I suppose another reason is that I haven't felt like working at losing more weight when I don't have the money to reward myself with guns. The good news is that I haven't gained back the weight I have lost.

Anywho, have fun with those guns. The .17 has never really interested me, but the 10/22 is a great classic. Good luck finding ammo to feed it if you don't already have some.

I have enough .22 to have some fun with the 10/22, or my favorite and first pistol, the high standard.
After reading the specs on the .17 MHR and seeing its better availability I chose it to have alternatives for shooting. Heck might even consider that .17 MHR revolver Ruger makes.

Inexpensive Savage - fun rifle

On wet and dreary day, I took the .17 HMR Savage to the range. Better weather was forecast later in the week, but I was wanting to try the rifle out and see if I was any good at bore sighting.
OK job of bore sighting - the rod holding the sighting mechanism was not very tight so I had to really work at it.
On the range at 25 yards I was about 5 inches up and 3 inches off on windage. Corrected the windage adjustment and headed to the 100 yard range. While it was challenging to get good looks at the target, I was able to zero it in at 100 yards with pretty consistent groupings using just a wooden rest with no sandbags, etc. That tiny hole my rounds created were pretty challenging to see, even with my spotting scope. Weather is better today, may take off another half day and try it again.

On a wet, dreary, foggy day I was able to keep nearly all of my shots at 100 yards on target in an area about the size of my fist.
Went back on a pleasant, sunny day and about all that I could say is that I kept them on the paper and on the target. What a difference. I guess with the foggy day I concentrated better. That's my story anyway. Everything was high on the nice day and I was shooting the same ammo. alignment was OK. I am shooting without a gun rest.
Going to pick up an inexpensive gun rest and try it and see if that helps.
Will be picking up my 10/22 this weekend, too.

Got my name at the top of the list at our local store for the new 17 super mag that's gonna hit the market pretty soon. I was actually thinking about a 17 til I heard about the mag and decided to wait for the new caliber. Reason I'm goin with a rim fire is simply don't wanna work up a load for, say, a 204, 17 hornet, etc.

Just curious what local ranges you go to? I'm out of Cedar park and have been going to Eagle Peak, but was curious if you were familiar with Best of the West out of Leander. I have recently set my centerfires to the side lately and have focused on 22lr mainly and am trying to find a decent range.

Just picked up my 10-22 this weekend. Installed and bore sighted the scope last night.
Pictures of my two new rimfires are shown below.
I only go to the Hill Country Shooting Sports facility. There is another one further west called buck and bull, but it's a long rough road to get to it. I believe there is one in Fredericksburg that is available, too.
Have considered a few ranges in the SA area and kept planning to try out some IDPA at a range just northwest of SA, but don't recall its name.

Finally got to shoot the 10-22

Have had this bore sighted for nearly two weeks. Between weather and work could not get to the range.
Took off early yesterday.
One, I had several stovepipes. I was shooting federal and winchester .22LR ammo. The stovepipes happened with both ammo.
Two, dang I am having troubles with the slide release. Locking is easy. Releasing...Arggghhh
That being said, while I had some challenges getting it zeroed in, the gun did group nicely. I shot at 25 yards and 100 yards. Obviously my groupings at 25 were better than 100 for me.
Definitely enjoyed the rifle. I am really enjoying shooting long guns. Have kind of strayed from them many years ago, opting for pistols.

Good for you, pistolpos!!! Matter of fact I was roaming around shoppes yesterday and spotted a .17 like yours. I HAD been (had being the operative word) for a .17 til I learned of the new 17 super mag that Savage tells me will be released in the 2nd quarter of the year. Then I ran into a thumbhole style in another store and that really got my blood flowing. So, I thinkin, why not pick up a .17 before the super mags come out. If I don't like the .17 I could trade it off for a super mag later ...OR.....get the supernmag too. After all, don't everyone need 6 rimfires?

I had a chance recently to pick up a Savage .22 target rifle (Mk II TR) I've wanted for the last year, but I passed on it for now simply because I have no idea when I'll be able to find affordable .22 ammo again, and I don't feel like spending hundreds of dollars for a safe queen.

Maybe next year.

You will likely have the opportunity to buy a truckload of .22 LR ammunition long before you have the opportunity to buy that rifle you always wanted. Looking at buying a rifle you always wanted and will enjoy really pares small in comparison as to how long this ammunition shortage will last. I would have gotten the rifle.

Just My Take

You know you can only shoot one-at-a-time. Here's what you do, box that Ruger up, and ship it to my FFL. Feel free to include a few thousand round of ammo. Then, you can relax, and focus on shooting that other rifle. Friends like me, huh?! :D Congrats on the purchases. They look awesome.

I need a 10/22; well, I want a 10/22. :)

Yeah - what HE said! ^^^^^

The Mk II TR is a current production gun that isn't all that hard to find. I expect once the current ammo shortage blows over I will be able to find one without much problem. In the mean time I already have two rimfire handguns and one rimfire rifle I can't shoot. I just can't see adding another gun to that group right now. :(
