I bought this gun used, so I do not know how many rounds it has through it. As a result I find that I want to replace the recoil spring.

As some of you know, it has a bushingless bull barrel with a double recoil spring, intended to be replaced as one unit.

So, here are my questions:

1) Is the fact that I can take it apart and reassemble it without the disassembly tool a sign that the spring needs to be replaced? I sense that it is in that it shouldn't be that easy to do, but I'm relatively new to .45s, and this is the first gun that requires regular replacement of recoil springs (5,000 rounds, I believe) that I have ever owned.

2) Can I get a replacement from anybody but Kimber? They are sold out on their webpage and have been for a few weeks. If I need to put this in the safe for a bit that's OK, I have other handguns I like equally, but I hate the idea of making something a safe queen because of a basic parts issue. I'm sure that the old spring will still work, but will it work reliably? I don't know. Thus the dilemma.

A little help/advice on the matter would be appreciated. Thanks.

It has a double spring? Thats the first I have ever heard. The Ultra's I own all have one piece springs. And, if you can take it apart without the takedown tool, yes, that is a problem. You have no spring tension(which is because your spring is in 2 pieces) Go to Midway and get some Wolf springs for it.

My Ultra has the two piece spring. I believe there are replacement setups using a single spring. I do not remember for sure. Brownells would be the place to look.

If you look at the link I submitted, you'd see exactly what I'm talking about.

Here, I'll save you the trouble:

See? Two springs in a captive arrangement. Magical, isn't it?

So no, the spring itself is not broken.
