Afternoon,
I posted this at Calguns as well, but thought I would cast this out here too.

I'm going through the process of reviewing and acquiring all the items necessary prior to purchasing my first handgun and shotgun. Primary goal for both of these is SD and recreational shooting. It's time to start looking at securing the firearm(s). I've got two young boys < 4 years of age so keeping their curious mitts off the weapons is paramount while protecting from thieves is secondary. In my mind, I see having two "lock boxes". The first is something that can be stored near and accessed quickly from bed. The second would be a larger safe stored in my walk-in closet as I expect that once into this journey additional strays may need to be adopted.

Does anyone have any opinions as to this two lockbox methodology? For the quick access box, the AMSEC Defense Vault is interesting as it could store my shotgun, and pistol and be kept close at hand. Does anyone have specific thoughts on this model or an alternate suggestion?

When engaging in new activities, I prefer to invest in growth rather than buying something and quickly growing out of it. To that end, spending a little more money is OK.

Total budget for both units is around $1000.00 ± $200.00

Thanks for your thoughts.

Welcome to THR. Try the search function. There is a huge amount of good stuff and ideas already generated. I suggest you buy the best safe you; and then bolt it into floor... good luck

For the smaller pistol safe, I'd go with the gun vault. Very sturdy and easy to open (spring loaded door which automatically opens when unlocked). I would recommend though that if you're keeping the safe in a drawer or somewhere else without much horizontal access, get the one that opens from the top.

Thanks for the replies. Many of the results from the forum searches discuss Gun Vault and similar small arms storage. I didn't find many that contained specific opinions on the AMSEC Defense vault.
