I'm back to working the states that get the most requests for info on gun shops.

TX, CA, GA, FL, IL, OH are very high on that list. But Texas is at the top in terms of people looking for gun shops.

But what's with Texas? I have more shops on my site in CA than in Texas!!!

That just is not right.

I'm looking for good-quality stores all across the TX map, from Midland to Houston to San Antonio to Corpus Christi to Abilene to Amarillo, and all points in between.

As James Brown used to sing, "hep me."

Any and all replies much appreciated.

Waco - Praco Gun and Pawn on Waco Dr. is probably the best in town, (254) 753-5511

Keith's Ace Hardware on Hewitt Dr. has a fully stocked, full-service gun shop,
254-666-2520

College Station - Champion Firearms is much better than Burdett and Son IMO.

Elk Castle Shooting Sports in Fort Worth is alright in my book. I recently enjoyed their new range. :)

There's some place down on S. Congress, but I never go there...also, Chip McCormick is here, but that's not really a gunstore.

There's also a few dealers that don't really have storefronts or websites, but they do frequent the Saxet gunshow circuit. I've had good luck with GDS Enterprises, who specialize in black rifle stuff.

Hill Country Arms in Kerrville, on Sidney Baker St. did a lot of work with/for Thunder Ranch, before TR closed down and moved. Jeff is a great guy to deal with there.

What's the criterion for entry - a good shop vs. den of thieves/gruff commandos?

Can't believe

You don't have Whittakers in Kentucky. They have one of the biggest shops around. Generally have at least 3800 guns in stock! :what: And they carry a big assortment of Kimbers!

Here in Kali

Monkey,
If you really want to know the truth? Here in California we have a lot of "closet gun collectors" due to the "protective" gun laws that we have to protect the citizens of this state. Every time new gun laws are proposed, a rush to purchase guns occur.
Then to insure that we have enough purchasers of guns, the state has sponsored riots every few years, then the local chapters have gang participation with drive by shootings, and we have the ever popular serial murders from time to time. So we have the "demand" for guns from the populace and the cause to own guns.
Given the population of the state, you have large enough numbers of purchases which can keep gun stores alive.
So the old cause and effect with sufficient buyers and voila...you have a lot of gun stores.

i dont have a storefront so i don't count sorry.

chip mccormick doesn't allow walk-in's. in fact even dealers can't come by and pick up, they ship everything. i don't know if it's because they make money on shipping charges but they don't allow any pickups or walk-ins whatsoever.

these are the shops i frequent, and will actually be visiting this afternoon (day off). after 5 years in this area, i've figured out that if i can't get something from one of these then 90% of the time i don't need it!

You're site's missing a lot of shops. In Washington, I go to Wade's in Bellevue and Bear Arms in Kent. There's also Federal Way Discount Guns and Bullseye (the infamous store) in Tacoma. None of these are on your list. Plus a lot of pawn shops sell guns here.

Man, ask and ye shall receive! Thanks all for the suggestions.

Parallax, what are the FL stores that I'm missing? There's still tons of stores down there for me to call, so any recommendations are appreciated.

MLH, I'll give Whittakers a call. Some of the big shops think they're so big they don't need to advertise, and others realize that every bit of advertising helps.

DigMe, Burdett is one of those who think they're too successful to need my services. Thanks for the name of a competitor. I love bumping owners with big ego's off my site. ;)

GEM: "What's the criterion for entry - a good shop vs. den of thieves/gruff commandos?"

I'm trying to use the opinions of THR members as a guide. Thanks to the opinions of members here, I've either not approached certain shops or removed shops from my site because of their bad reputation. Admittedly, some of the shops on the site now aren't the best, but I'll weed them out in the future.

(So where is this list?)

Targetmasters in Garland is pretty good,
Ray's in South Dallas is a classic,
DRays at Preston and Forest is pretty good, and
Cheaper Than Dirt on the N side of Ft Worth is worth a visit too.

Alpine has a little store with it but their range rules suck!

Elk Castle - nice people, awful/outrageous prices :barf: , ok range.

I agree that CTD in north Fort Worth is a worth a visit. It is like a mini gun show to me.

Academy stores have some good prices on ammo and guns in my area.

I also highly recomend www.sportingarms.com up in Lewisville. Great customer service and fast delivery times.

The best pistol range in the Fort Worth area in my opinion is Winshester Gallary off of 820 and Lancaster.

The Bullet Trap in Plano is excellent and they have plenty of rentals.

Here's a biggie: Elm Fork - Dallas

There's a little shop over in Highland Park Village, Dallas for those with a taste for the finer things :what: Smoothbores'N'more Lots of guns there - make sure you check out the "back room". Rather like the Holland & Holland showroom and way better than the Bass Pro Fine Gun Room in Grapevine. (IMHO)

Jeez - I forgot the one I'm actually a member of:

http://www.dfwgun.com

Mockinbird Lane, Dallas.

Another of my favorites is the Pioneer Gun Shop on Pioneer in Irving but they're relocating soon - I'll update when they figure out exactly when and where.

The Gun Store
4410 Tintop Road
Weatherford, TX 76087

It's a little store few miles south of Weatherford
I try not to go in there. About the last four trips through the door I came out with new guns.
And I only stopped in to have a coffee and shoot the breeze. :D

Sporting Arms is a big internet gun sales site but DFW locals can buy "over the counter" from them. Usually have the best prices around.
I'm picking up a pistol in the morning. :)

Lewisville, Tx

Didn't see Sporting Arms was shown already.
