IRVING — An Irving teen-ager accused of trying to rob a man at gunpoint Wednesday night was shot by the victim in a parking lot of an apartment complex, police said Thursday.

The 16-year-old remained in intensive care in critical condition Thursday at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, police said. The teen suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, police said.

The man was not injured, police said. Police declined to identify the man or the teen.

No other injuries were reported in the shooting that occurred about 9 p.m. Wednesday in the 9400 block of E. Valley Ranch Parkway.

The attempted holdup victim, a 45-year-old Irving man, told police that he was sitting in his pickup truck in the parking lot, talking on his cellphone, when the teen walked up. The teen — armed with a semi-automatic handgun — demanded the man’s cellphone and wallet, police said.

The man told the teen he would give him his wallet and acted as though he was going to get it, but instead grabbed a larger caliber revolver that was lying on the seat, police said.

As he pushed the teen’s gun away, the man shot the suspect, police said.

The teen spun around and ran away, police said. Fearing that the teen would return, the man drove away from the complex, police said.

A few minutes later, residents found the teen, without a handgun, sitting on a curb near the apartment complex office, telling them he had been shot, police said.

The teen was transported by ambulance to Parkland, police said. As the teen was headed to the hospital, the man called police to say that he had almost been robbed at the apartment complex.

The man drove back to the complex and gave police details of the attempted holdup.

Because the teen did not have a handgun when he was found, police searched the complex and discovered it a few hours later.

“At this point, we believe it was self-defense,” Irving police spokesman David Tull said.

The teen is expected to be charged with aggravated robbery, Tull said. The shooting case will be turned over to a Dallas County grand jury for consideration, Tull said.

LOL! Kid gets what he got...provided that was the way of it. Sounds pretty sketchy about the guy having a phone not calling the police right away after he shot the suspect and the fact that the victim drove away from the scene...the kid fled.

Brady camp would view this as yet another innocent child being hurt/killed by gun violence.

We see this as a law-abiding citizen defending his life with effective tools from a predatory thug.

Can we all say it together. "Drug deal gone bad". This guy was sitting at an apartment complex where he doesn't live and had a gun on the seat? He then fled after shooting fearing someone he just shot in the chest was going to return? How naive are we supposed to be here? :scrutiny:

You could be right, but we do not know for certain. Many people keep firearms in their car, and keep them very accessible.

Was it a drug deal? Maybe, but many times I pull into a parking lot to make a phone call on my cell because I'd rather not drive while on the phone. Sometimes I need to write things down when I am on the phone. Most times I return a voice mail when I get to my desitnation, or after I enter my vehicle prior to leaving a place. Does my behavior catagorize me as a drug dealer?

If this were a drug deal gone bad...who was the dealer and who was the buyer? The 45 year old, or the 16 year old?

I sure wish more people were like you and pulled over instead of talking on the cell phone while driving. IMHO these people drive worse than drunks. Hardly a day goes by I don't have a near miss because some idiot on a cell phone is not paying attension.

You would stay there to see if he came back?

I have a dedicated car gun. Mine sits on the seat under a towel when I am driving.
I'm shocked that you all don't

There are a thousand reasons to be in an apartment complex where you don't live, especially at 9pm.
Girlfriend lives there, buddy lives there, construction work, lost and calling for directions.
What on earth leads you to drug deal?

For all the tactics discussions etc on this board, now people freak out because a guy did exactly what he should? Let's review:

1) Had a gun, always most important
2) Had it accessible, always important
3) Hit what he was aiming at, didn't get shot himself
4) Moved to cover (what if the idiot had friends nearby?)
5) Called the police from a place of safety.

And you guys think he did it wrong? He is alive and not likely going to jail.
That's a pretty darned good result.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that a lot of you are closet anti's.......

Great first sentance

When was the last time a newspaper called the good guy who defended himself a "Victim". I read a lot of these types of articles and usually they don't use the word victim unless they are talking about the kid that got shot. Another thing that is interesting is there is no interview with the family where they talk about what a good kid the robber was.

I wonder what caliber he was using? They call it a large caliber so that makes me think either .45 or 44. I couldn't imagine shooting a large revolver in the car I bet his ears ring for a week.

From what I've noticed, drug dealers don't goto the police and say they've been shot/I've just shot someone. Those kind of people are trying to AVOID the police, not run to them.
