Home video shows teen stealing gun from Wichita man’s holster as he works on car
Wichita police say they need help finding a teen who was captured on home surveillance video stealing a 9 mm handgun from a Wichita man working on a car in his driveway. It happened at about 2:45 p.m. Feb. 14 in the 800 block of North Chautauqua, near Ninth and Grove.

In the video, the man appears to be crouching down and is facing the driver’s side door of a car that Wichita police said Wednesday was parked in his driveway. A male who looks to be in his teens sneaks up behind the man and quickly yanks the handgun from a holster on the man’s waist.

The teen immediately points the gun at the man, who whirls around, then steps backward into the street.

Apparently the kid who stole the gun didn't get the memo on the deterrent value of open carry

Did it say he open carry? Given his position it could have been exposed conceil carried piece.
Another gun on the street that will help antigunners in their fight to take guns away from all of us.

I want to say I didn't want to turn this into an open carry debate but I know that's absolutely impossible. So, here's the takeaway that I got from it even in your front yard you had better be paying attention.

As somebody pointed out it's entirely possible that this guy was not intending to open carry. For whatever reason my iPad wouldn't open the videos and I never got to see them but if your intent is to concealed carry then you need to make sure it stays concealed.

I was walking my dog one day and I saw EXACTLY this setup. One of my neighbors was leaning over to work on his motorcycle and had a Glock 42 sticking out of his ass crack. I think it may have been in one of those cheap Uncle Mike's holsters. I was standing three feet behind him for five minutes and he never knew I was there.

Because of the video angle, it's not possible to tell for certain if the man was intentionally carrying openly, but it is clear that the teen was able to see the gun from quite a distance. It's also possible to see that there wasn't much of a cover garment to conceal the gun, so if it was supposed to be concealed, it likely wouldn't be concealed well, even under less stressing circumstances than squatting to work on a vehicle.

What is clear is that whether it was intentional or not, he was open carrying from a practical perspective.

My take:

1. If you're going to conceal, take the time and make the effort to do it right.
2. If you're going to carry openly in an environment where people can approach you from behind, it's important to use some kind of a retention holster.

Fixed it for 'ya. Rest I totally agree with.

<sigh>

Here we go again.

Apparently this guy didn't get the memo about the safety of concealed carry either;

The only logical conclusion is no one should be carrying a firearm.

A little background info. 9th and Grove in Wichita is in the middle of gang territory and high crime. A lot of shootings, drive-bys, drug deals and other criminal activity. What this incident really shows is how unsafe it is to work on your car or other outdoor activity in this part of the city. Pretty bold attack by a most likely wannabe gang banger.
