I'm having a little trouble determining if the grips on the S&W model 29-10 "bounty hunter" are round or square. From the factory it has a Pachmayr gripper grip that covers the backstap and butt of the frame. I think it's a square frame, but want to make sure. Here's a link to a picture...

I'm thinking of buying a set of nice hoque wood grips. I got the gun as a Christmas gift, and finally got out and shot it earlier this week. It was very mild with some 240 gr. .44 special reloads. I also ran a few cylinders of Remington UMC 180 gr. 44. mag loads that are rated at 1650fps. Those got my attention, but the recoil was not really uncomfortable. I also tried out some Speer gold dot 210 gr. 44 mag loads that I think are rated around 1400fps. Those seemed like a good middle of the road load. I think I'll use them as a SD/HD load. I will probably carry the gun occasionally as a CCW, but always when I'm out hunting and fishing. I'll stick to my 1911 and Glock 30 as my normal primary carry guns.

What is a good source for hogue grips?

Take the grips off and compare to this picture:

1) It is a round butt grip. S&W "deleted" the square butt designs on most all models around 1996/7. Most guns since then come with round butts, and if you want square, you buy conversion grips.

2) Hogue is a good source for their grips - they sill directly last time I looked (last year). If not, google them and you'll find re-sellers.

3) If you want the common Hogue Monogrip, I would ask why you would switch off the Pachmayr Grippers. The Hogues tend to be softer, which in the store people perceive to be better. But they also squish and twist under firing and cause more shifting for the next shot and less control. If you are looking for custom wooden Hogue grips, then disregard my comment.

If it's wood you are looking for, you may like to know the 3" S&W N-frames originally came with custom finger-grooved "Combat" grips made of Goncalo Alves. They were introduced in the 80s along with the gun. They are attractive, effective, though not quite as comfortable as the Pachy gripper. They show up at FleaBay and classifieds from time to time, but are pricey as their quality, appearance, and rarity command.

I appreciate the information from both of you. I did take them off for a quick check and cleaning and they were obviously round butt.

I like the pachmayr grip very much. I just wanted to have another set to dress it up some.

They've got some beautiful grips on the hoque site.

Oro, that is a VERY nice setup in your pic. I love the US holster.
