I stripped the wood and used Watco Danish Oil (dark walnut) and then 5 or 6 coats of Tru Oil. After completely dry I used 0000 steel wool to reduce the shine to a point that suited me. The holster in the photo is a reproduction Civil War US Navy pistol frog. I used to want to portray a sailor assigned to the Mississippi River Squadron. Getting too old for that but I like the equipment

Thank you and yes, I find this to be very true. I was going for the military oiled walnut look. I’m almost cross eyed from searching the web for original 1860 Army pistols. Found several images that I tried to replicate as closely as my skills permitted.

Excellent photos and thanks for sharing. I got fairly close to the military version. Mine’s not quite as dark but that’s probably 160 years of aging. I also briefly thought about dinging mine up a bit but it represents a fairly new revolver. These are by far my favorite cap n ball revolvers.

Wait a minute! What’s written on that military grip? COE ?T? CAV.
