SAA hammer spring spacer implant

I need to remove my Uberti SAA Cattleman grips prior to implanting a hammer spring spacer from Brownells. But the two-piece grips do not have a screw holding them together like the Colt SAA I am familiar with. How do I remove these grips? Do I just remove the backstap by unscrewing the three backstrap screws and the wood grips release in some manner? Am I missing something here? Thank you , Bill

Wil Terry is right, but if all you are going too do is put a spacer under the mainspring it will not be necessary to remove the grips from the backstrap. Simply remove the two top backstrap screws and the one in the bottom, and then slide off the backstrap and grips as an assembly. Replace in reverse order.

Thanks...

Thanks guys! This board is a blessing to me as a novice in this stuff.

greater addiction is correct....

Old Fuff... you are correct. The Ubereti I purchased 6 mos ago lead to a recent purchase of a Colt SAA. I'm tinkering with the Uberti to learn my way around SAA's before tinkering with my Colt. Regards, Bill

Well in that case ...

Go to www.gunbooks.com (or Brownells, or any big bookseller) and buy a copy of Jerry Kuhnhausen's book: "The Colt Single Action Revolvers - A Shop Manual (Vol. 1 & 2).

Thereafter you will know everything and anything about working on Colt Single Action revolvers and other similar clones. Oh ya' the book will cost you a bit, but nothing like a mistake will if you're working on a gun and make a bo-bo. You read this book, and thereafter you'll be the resident expert in your neighborhood.

One other thing. In case you're worried, the book is written in "layman's English" rather then something only an engineer or gunsmith would understand, and to make it easier it's filled with how-to-do-it pictures.

SAA hammer spring spacer implant

Implanted Brownell neoprene hammer spring spacers in Uberti and Colt SAA's this morning. Thanks again for the tips on gripframe removal from the board. This less than 5-minute modification, costing less than $5 for both spacers, really lightened the finger pressure required to fire the revolvers. Regards, Bill

Back in pre-historic times we did this with leather. Time marches on ... :D

Bill, if you enjoyed making that mod be sure and check this article over on Gunblast.com:

Slicking up an Uberti

Not only does it answer your original question (with pics to boot) but the mods the author suggests are outstanding for performance on this gun. I did 'em exactly as detailed in this article and the difference was truly amazing! My Cattleman shoots so incredibly crisp now that it could truly compare to something much more expensive. Here's a little writeup I did on it over on Handloads.com:

I'll have to ease...

myself into taking on a task like that. Thanks for the link. Bill
