These are pictures from Haiti. Ignoring the odd lump on the man's forehead, what kind of pistol is he holding?

Yeah, I thought it might be a zip gun of some kind, but a flare gun probably does make more sense.

Give some junior high kids some unsupervised access to a shop and thats what they will make. In other words i dont really think thats even a firing pistol of any kind. In the second shot you can see that the majority of the "pistol" is just two pieces of iron spot welded together. They look like they were cut off a fence or something.

If I remember correctly, the lump is some sort of infection, possibly even a parasite.

Purulent exudate under an infected boil.
A tumor, malignant or benign
a golf ball...whatever.

There certainly seem to be working springs on that thing.. if it was pointed at me I'd shoot first and ask questions later. I'd guess it's a zip gun.. maybe firing shotgun shells? Those were VERY common in the RSA, made from crude pipe etc.
