Hey Rexster, thanks for making a great point, that's alot the same way I look at it. I was a boyscout myself so I know to always be prepared, of coarse - but there's nothing wrong w/ anticipating the need either. Now if lay-offs had never happened and I was still hooking-up and worse, disconnecting cable in the ghetto everyday, I might reconsider other alternatives. But now-a-days I make my own hours and I work where I want. I can usually anticipate to a high degree of accuracy what my daily threat level will be like - though naturally, no one's a fortune teller...

On an interesting side note, I actually do own and frequently carry one of those blued telescopic police batons, at about 18" it folds-up quite nicely on a belt and frequently refer them to friends who realize the need but don't like guns and they're completely street legal in AL, mostly. It has provoked some cops to pull-up and ask about it on occassion but most are of the same general oppinion...

"Hey there sir, whatcha-up to today?"
"Howdy, just out here pounding pavement, doing the knocks on the doors and all that."
"You a salesman?"
"Yes sir, alarm systems is my game." *wave clip board*
"Uh-huh, say is that a nightstick you're wearing?"
"This thing here? Sure is, happy to say."
"Well where'd you get that, citizen?"
"Cop shop, $20."
"Right, well you know those aren't legal to carry concealed, right?"
"Yes sir, that's why it's on my belt."
"And folks just invite you into their homes with that thing?"
"Yes."
"...Really?"
"Well, most don't either notice, realize what they're looking at, or care."
"Alright then, why do you have it?"
"Stray dogs."
"...That's probably the most logical and rational excuse I've ever heard. Alright, you have a nice day then there, sir. Stay safe now."
"Hey wait, you interested in an alarm system?"
"No thanks, I'm with ADT."
"Of coarse you are, but they suck to be so expensive."
"...Gyah-dangit you're right, okay whatcha got?"

LOL - that happened a few days ago...

OK, now that I've read that and thought about it, the 1911 mag makes perfect sense for loading.

You never saw The Magnificicent Seven? That was a two handed 200 yard off hand shot.

WARNING - CLASSIC WESTERN PLOT SPOILERS

If memory serves, James Coburn, playing "Red" (That wouldn't have anything to do with your name, would it Red Cent?) shoots a man off his horse. After the kid starts says its the best shot he's ever seen, I could have sworn Mr. Coburn replies "The worst. I was aiming for his horse..."

I think it is a good choice. Myself, I prefer a 45 Colt though.
The .45 Colt and the .357 are exactly the same size. But the .45 Colt, because of the bigger holes, is lighter and over the long term would be more comfortable to carry.

I agree with Vern Humphrey.
I love the the .357 cartridge, but the .357 "old model" Vaquero I had (meaning the one that used the freaking heavy full size frame) was quite the beast. The cylinder was obviously just too big for .357. I'd imagine the problem is slightly lessened with the newer model Vaqueros that use a smaller frame, but still... .45 is going to be a lighter gun.
At least until you load it...

By the way, I just read that New Vaqueros were once also temporarily produced in .357/9mm - is that a fact? I'm aware that there's a few 9mm revolvers on the market, but I know for sure that I've never heard of a single .357/9mm cylinder elsewhere, I just didn't think the chambering would match-up. Anyone know about prices? I suppose that would even be a cheaper way to practice than the .38s!

If I were going to do this, I'd get a shorty Schofield, quite possibly a Russian, chambered in .45 Colt (or Schofield, if I could handload).

"but I know for sure that I've never heard of a single .357/9mm cylinder elsewhere,"

My son has a nice set of Ruger Blackhawks in .38/.357, that also came with 9mm cylinders.

I, too, prefer the .45 Colt/45 ACP. My 4-5/8 in. Blackhawk has only the .45 Colt cylinder, but my 7-1/2 in. one has a second cylinder for .45 ACP.
