well I like the idea of the ultrasonic cleaners even though you got to rinse the brass off. Big deal when cleaning takes 30 minutes. I am looking for a cleaner that can hold at least 1,000 pieces of brass in 45 colt.... was hoping to even find one that would hold at least 1,000 pieces of .223. So none of the Hornady, Lyman, or other companies hold that much... most hold 1/4 of that. So I went searching ebay.... I found one ultrasonic cleaner that has a 9liter capacity and one with 5,5liter capacity. Both these are used for jewerly or medical purposes but show it being used on brass. The wattage are 450 and 540 respectively... both has the wire basket...also have heat... both are digital displays... price is 259 and 379 respectively....

My concern is am I going to have enough room in the 5.5liter model? Or is the 9Liter model the better choice? Anyone use one of these commercial grade cleaners?

Reason I like the Ultrasonic Cleaner is..
1) No lead dust... puts my mind at ease
2)Quick... sure I gotta let them dry but I can do that overnight
3)Cleans inside and out... im not a match shooter but i am sure this still helps
4)Multipurpose... can clean carbs, golf clubs, jewelry, and other metal pieces

i am sure there are more

I bought the Hornady Magnum US cleaner recently, and love it. Heater, dual transducers, not limited to 480 second cycles. It will NOT hold the volume of cases that you require. I highly doubt that the 5.5 liter model would either. Forget for a moment what the liquid volume is, as it's the holding capacity of the basket that determines how many cases can be inserted and covered by the volume of liquid. Another thing to remember is that if you load the thing up with 1000 cases, none of them will come clean to your liking. My instructions suggest that the cases be stirred several times during a cleaning cycle (30 minutes for me), and I notice that if I don't, the results are not as good as when I do. I think there's a good chance that even with the 9 liter model and 1000 cases, you wan't get them all clean.

The Hornady Magnum could meet your needs, but you would have to break the cleaning cycles into smaller batches of 250 or so (my guess). While I bought the Hornady brass cleaner, I've found a squirt of Dawn and a 9mm case full of Lemishine from Walmart cleanes just as good. I reuse the fluid for at least 3 cleaning cycles. After 30 minutes in the Hornady, all I do is rinse them in water and roll them around in a bath towel to remove most of the water. Then they go directly into corn cob for an hour where they come out dry and ready to load. They don't need to be tumbled, that's just what I do. It's also big enought to clean your other parts.

hmm bummer i was hoping I could get closer to 1000 223 cases.... guess not! Anybody else have any experience with these?

I probably have the 9liter version, it was lab equipment. It's very limited on heating up solutions, with a max of 69C. I do not have the basket for mine but I use a inner container to hold my cleaning solution, 1gal. It has 4 transducers for generating the ultrasonic sound wave. What John said is true when you over fill one. I've used a lot of different solution over the last year trying to find that magic one. Pure Citric acid 1 tbs/qt and a dab of Dawn with the solution hot near boiling works best as any I have tried, USC not required. This solution can be done using a camp stove. You do need some type of basket so you can agitate the brass. Now all of the liquid cleaners leave the brass dull. After I dry the brass I run them in my tumber with 20/40 corncob and NuFinish polish. The polish helps retard tarnishing.

The problem with ultrasonic cleaners is that you have to babysit them while cleaning because the cleaning cycle is only about 8 minutes. :( This 40 pound stainless steel media tumbler will do about 2,100 pieces of mixed pistol brass.

It's expensive and it's built like a Sherman tank.

That is complete overkill. I don't know how anyone could justify spending that much to clean brass.

That may be true for some but Not on my Branson 5200 or commercial units. It will run 24/7 if you don't set the timer. It can be programmed to start once temp is met too.

so how much brass can your 9L ultrasonic cleaner handle? Are we talking 300 .223? 400? 500?

I would love to get that big jumbo rock tumbler but I am not going to pay 800 bucks for a starter kit....

Ultra sonic is good for the wife's ring and for cleaning brushes, but I do not have time to clean one case mouth at a time.

The transducer in the bottom of the tank may look tiny, but it is large compared to the half wave length of the frequency driving it. The beam has lobes, and getting the center lobe to go into the neck of a single case takes some aiming.

I clean brushes with the ultra sonic cleaner, but it has never lived up to the expectation from the 6mmBR forum article.
I get the inside of case necks clean with stainless steel media in a Thumbler's Tumbler.

The largest one (8510) holds 5 gallons of liquid in the reservoir. You can easily put 1000 30-06 shells in at a time. The cleaner product that they sell is completely biodegradable and environmentally safe.

Hmmm im thinking the ss thumbler might b the ticket.... holds 2# of brass... not the capacity i really wanted but it will have to work i guess

If you are looking for greater SS capacity take a look at post#5. It can easily handle up to 15 pounds of cases. Budget permitting of course. Not sure what a large capacity commercial grade ultrasonic cleaner would cost, but this may be a cost effective solution. BTW, I have no affiliation with this product.

Did some looking and a big 19.5 x 11.5 x 6 in Branson 8510-DTH Ultrasonic Cleaner is 1400.00 Was looking for something to clean my plastic guns. on Scientific support.
