Uncle Sam says I'm moving to California...

Welcome to California and thanks for your service.

My wife's family is from Fresno, so there is no good family reason not to go there, and plus, she is really excited. I'm really at the point of just trying to deal with it; it's only 3 years after all. Just looking for pointers from others who might have been put in the same situation.
Do you have any relatives/friends outside of California? If you do, you may consider selling California offending firearms to them (for legal transfer of ownership) and buy them back when you leave California. ;)

I won't be in LA, SF or one of those big cities, so I am guessing that the police might be a bit more laid back in those areas, but then again you never know.
You will find most metropolitan cities and even small towns laden with drug/gang related elements and city PD/sheriff/CHP are not laid back at all (more like stressed out). Stay deep within the gun related laws and your stay will be much more pleasant - FYI, you will need gun locks for all of your firearms and I would recommend a California approved gun safe to store the firearms you end up keeping inside California.

If you are looking for a place to shoot, Fresno has a great indoor range called "The Range" near Costco and check out Lemoore Sportsman's Club near Lemooore Naval Air Station for outdoor pistol/rifle/shotgun shooting. It's a 24/7 range with low annual fee and even has stocked lake and camp ground. Enjoy your stay.

In the interest of supporting you in your endeavors, I have your solution!

On your way to California, you will pass through my town.

Drop your guns off with me. I'll even buy a new safe for you. You can pick them up in three years when you pass through again.

Don't worry, I'll feed them and bathe them and exercise them regularly! :p

Why do you think this? FFLs are forbidden to complete a transfer unless there is a lock for the firearm

I was referring to the transfer of firearms option - should have made it more clear.

As a service member being compelled to live in California, I would go there with what I got, guns and all.

That's just me though...

If you have an AKO account there is a Second Amendment forum in the discussion groups. Ask what other people who have been stationed in CA do with their guns when they have to move into the state.

Also, thank you for your service.

LRS Ranger-

Thanks more than you realize for the job you and your family do for the rest of us.

Other than the lack of rights granted to law abiding folks in Kalifonistan, I'll bet you will really enjoy the beauty and people of that great state, and 3 years will pass before you can believe it. Stay out of the bad areas in the big cities and you can pretend it's almost a normal place to live.

You've probably seen worse, just not in this country before.

Best regards and good luck to you and your family.

You'll also find him on CalGuns.net, a great place to ask questions.

Here's some resources. You can get the most important parts down in a couple of hours of study.

There's a list of rifles by make and model that are prohibited assault weapons no matter what features they have and you can't bring them to CA.

If your rifle is not on the list than it will be a prohibited assault rifle only if it has the wrong combination of features. Such as a removable magazine. The magazine is not 'removable' if it requires a tool to remove it. You get around this by installing a Bullet Button, a magazine release that can't be operated by fingertip, but can operate with a tool, such as the tip of a bullet. I'm not making this up.

Absolutely no magazines over 10 rounds, no shuriken and no lipstick knives.

Thank you for your service. My son just signed up for the Army, goes in in a couple of weeks. The recruiters are good people but seem to be somewhat stressed. Their jobs tend to eat their lives. Welcome to California.

Thanks all for both the sympathy and pointers. California is a beautiful state. What with all the retarded legalities we forget that most of the state is rural. I hope that I go to one of those places. The only 2 weapons that I really think are going to give me problems are my Benelli M3, and my LWRC M6.. All the rest are normal pistols, leverguns, bolt guns, whatever. We will see what the DOJ lady says when I talk to her tomorrow. I will post the response. Liberal: Give you son the best of wishes.. hang in there and it will all be over. Basic is easy now from what I hear.
