Finally did it, paid the price for a smith 1911. Prettiest gun I "might own". Doesn't make sense though, I just purchased a 30-30 four months ago and had no problems w/ the NCIS. But yesterday after deciding to buy the most expensive and appealing, not to mention safest gun I'll ever own I was put on "hold". I haven't even gotten as much as a speeding ticket in this amount of time. I have no idea. :fire: Maybe it will be released by the 10th. I honestly hope the brady loving uh uhs sit around till the llth and my dealer releases it to me anyway. :neener: Sorry, just thought it was a little silly.
 
Don't worry about it. My brother has had that happen almost everytime he buys a gun. Something to do with another person with his exact same name who also has a bad record.

the guys that get "Holds", do you guys ever use your Social Security Numbers? I always use mine because im a Jr and ive never had a hold

If it is determined that prohibitive criteria exists, the NICS Examiner will advise the FFL to DENY the firearm transaction. If potentially prohibitive criteria exists and more information is required in order to make the determination, the NICS Examiner will advise the FFL to DELAY the firearm transaction and the FFL will receive the following instructions:
“. . .NTN ___ will be delayed while the NICS continues its research. If you do not receive a final response from us, the Brady Law does not prohibit the transfer of the firearm on day/date.”
The NICS Examiner will provide the FFL with the date of the third business day after the firearm check was initiated. Business days do not include the day the check was initiated, Saturdays, Sundays, and any day state offices in the state of purchase are closed. If the FFL has not received from the NICS a final determination after three business days have elapsed since the delay response, it is within the FFL’s discretion whether or not to transfer the firearm (if state law permits the transfer). If the FFL transfers the firearm, the FFL must mark “No resolution was provided within three business days” on line 21d of the ATF Form 4473. It is recommended the FFL record the date provided in the delay response on which the firearm may be lawfully transferred under federal law if a final determination of proceed or denied is not received from the NICS.
When a transaction is DELAYED, the NICS Examiner begins extensive research on the potential prohibitor. When the research is complete, the NICS Examiner calls the FFL and gives a PROCEED or DENY decision on the firearm transaction.

I bought three handguns (not at the same time) and was put on hold each time for 3 business days. First time, the approval was phoned through to the FFL just within the 3 days. Second and third times, approval was phoned through next business day.

So don't worry about it. There's nothing necessarily sinister in receiving a delay notification. In my case, I'm guessing it might be because I'm a Green Card holder and they need to check with immigration that my Green Card number is valid.

Yeah, it happens from time to time, even if it's never happened before and you just bought a gun last week.

Best thing to do, if it keeps happening, is to fill out the form and get yourself a PIN that you can use on the 4473.

NICS delay

I find that if I'm in a gun shop, the OK will be back in ten minutes. If I'm at a gun show I get a delay, and since the gun show is a weekend event, that amounts to a denial. I suspect the delay is there to put a damper on gun shows.

It would be easy for NICs to look innocent. They can blame it on having a smaller staff on week ends while we all know more guns are sold on week ends.

NCIS -- better TV show than some of the other crap, not that it's great

NICS -- terrible system of terrible government...
 
If you get to 11 days, you have my sympathy. California sucks.

NCIS is a good show. More delays at gun shows or on weekends while one is going on because more guns are being sold. I have bought dozens of guns and never had to wait an undue amount of time, 30 min. at most.
 
It's not called a PIN, it's call a UPIN and since I got one I,ve never been delayed. The NICS operator does a general check of info on 4473.
You can talk to ATFE and they'll send you UPIN request form. the UPIN insures the check is conducted only for period between date of UPIN approval and present 4473 application and takes care of any false positives before UPIN.
I've never been delayed sincee getting UPIN and before in was about 50% approval rate.
 
I have purchased 7 firearms this year. Haven't had to do anything except check the boxes, sign the FFL and pay. My CCWD permit and photo ID is all they look at. Oh and don't forget its illegal to have a gun in Chicago last I heard.
 
first 2 guns, i didn't get put on hold... after that, I've been put on hold for @ least 2 days every time i purchased a gun. I have a feeling i will get deny in the future somehow...some way and i have a perfect background..
