In May I was given The Back-Up as a present.
The website claims that it keeps the gun closer to hand and is easier to access. This is true. However it also claims that it will not scratch or damage any part of the firearm, unfortunately this is not true. After having my gun rest on the rack for just over a month the forestock had a number of scratches on it from the shotgun being jostled or bumped while climbing in and out of the bed. The stock itself developed a groove close to the trigger guard where the stock bore most of the weight.

Granted my 870 Police Magnum has a wooden stock and is more likely to be damaged in this way than a polymer stock would be.

For those thinking of purchasing this product I would suggest lining the hooks with some sort of soft foam before racking your gun with it. Also take great care climbing into bed, I skinned my shins on the outer edge of the hooks a few times during sleepy moments before I became accustom to its presence.

That is a really bad place to leave a gun as thievs all know people hide things under the matress.

The day I need to have a rifle under or at
my bed side is the day
it needs to be in the bed with me
and/or we will have 24/7 guard duty going on in the home.

Thanks for the review of this POS item though OP.

I don't want one. Seems to me I would be bumping into it when climbing in and out of bed, it would possibly damage the gun as mentioned, and when in bed, seems like it would be exposed. I would rather mount a shotgun on the wall side of the headboard or under the bed frame. I could get at it quick enough that way.

Owen,

I don't think it's meant to hold the shotgun 24/7 and it's certainly not marketed as a secure way to store your shotgun. I think responsible owners would realize that they should lock their guns in their safe before leaving the house unattended.

"As seen on TV?" How many of you has seen that commercial on TV? I wouldn't mind having one, but my wife would have a cow.

Nobody said anything about leaving it there. More for pulling the shotgun out of the safe at night, then replacing it in secure storage in the morning when you get out of bed.

Do you need a handgun on or around you most of the time? Do you need firearms for protection in the first place?

I submit it has little to do with need, or with the odds of one being attacked (which are incredibly small for most of us). While the odds are low, the stakes are high if such a thing ever happens. When it does I'd rather have a long gun in arm's reach.

So I clicked on the link provided in the original post and I'm looking at the product and realize that the hooks look like painted steel and I'm thinking, "man that can't be gentle on a gun's finish." Then I came back and read the review. Yup.

They should coat the hooks with some kind of rubber or soft plastic.

But as it is, I guess it would be simple enough to put some foam tape or weatherstripping inside the hooks.

Mine rests muzzle-up against the wall between my bed & my nightstand.

Sometimes simplicity is best - I really don't understand why you'd need to hide a shotgun at night and risk it getting tangled in your covers.
