Ungulate seasons - how's it going so far?

First two seasons in the books (early archery and primitive), and I'm skunked on whitetails.

Luckily, there are in essence 5 more seasons left: Mid-archery, gun, late archery, special bonus doe #1, and special bonus doe #2.

How goes it for you?

Nothing.... skunked twice by the bow LOL... white tail are still running in the evenings at the house. Hadn't been to the lease yet. Will be there starting this Saturday (rifle/general season starts).

One fatty, I've been out only two days this year and gnabbed me a pope and young for the first time.

The freezer is well stocked for the moment

My wife shot her first one a couple of hours ago. She has never hunted and only started shooting my .308 rifle a month ago. She made a perfect shot on this guy at 160 yards. The last photo is what a Nosler Ballistic tip from a .308 does at that range.







The lungs came out in about 6 chunks. I love these bullets for deer.

I'm in the game with 5 pronghorn, we did say ungulate didnt we? Have not been out for whitetail yet, usually do not go out till Jan on management hunts for culls, spikes and does. Should be another 10 or so then.

1 doe mule deer, 8:00 on opening day and 1 cow elk last tuesday. Needless to say, i won't be spending too much time in the grocery store meat aisle. .270 50 grains of h4350 and a 150 gr. nosler partition. 2shots - 2 kills both DRT.

sneed, public lands hunt in WY. Doe tags are $34 each, buck tags are $270. I didnt seen the need to spend $10,000 either. Split 3 ways, 15 lopes came to about $650 each. That includes beer, tortillas, jalapenos, and diesel from TX to WY. Unfortunately there were some unexpected costs associated with the trip… we all got nice bucks and now have to pay the taxidermist, oh well.

Wow Z... I wish I thought about that... totally didn't think about out of state hunts, considering where you said you lived.... High Plains is Lubbock to Amarillo into Dalhart area... so that's why I assumed. Sorry about that.

I'd love to shoot that many antelopes... I'd just have the hides tanned, and the skulls bleached if bucks... that's just me. Unless of course, it was a P&Y Antelope Buck :-D

79 5/8", just missed the book by 3/8" but I doubt I'd be any happier if it went 90". Here in TX I would need some luck with drawing tags too.

how far did that critter go?

Straight up, one 360, 4 or 5 steps toward the creek, same number of steps back, a 180 and then not even a kick. Dead within 5 feet of where it started.

1 cow elk Saturday evening here in Colorado

Still have buck tag and either sex elk left to go next week.
All taken on public land on my days off.

If you add in what my dad, my son, and my daughter have taken we are at 17animals so far.
It has been a much better than average year for us.

wyohome, Tha's great your wife went out hunting, and even better she got a taste of success!

Filled my bull tag right before the end of light on the last day of the first season. Was a little guy but nearly enough red meat for my wife and I for a year.

Would like to go try for a antlerless goat up in WY but really not sure where to start. Figuring an antlerless would be a good intro to them to see if I like the meat for anything other than doctored up sausage to cover the taste.

I've hunting quite a bit, as I've got some time on my hands - if you're going to be unemployed, now is the time! I'd rather have the work, though.

Anyhow - shot a does two weeks back w/muzzleloader, and a spike this morning, taken with Marlin 30-30. About 25-30 yards from the tree, a lovely wet area with lots of mallards. The buck ran about 65 yards after the shot - I had to go find him. Good blood trail. I hit a little too far aft to get shoulder (he was angling towards me, and I was about 30' up), too low for spine, too high for heart - I hit lung & liver. Very long drag; takes me 30 min to walk in, I dragged for near two hours. I think I'm going to get some hip waders, so I can drag the next one out through the creek... .

I'm done hunting ungulates for the year, and I successfully put meat in the freezers.

I filled one of my two elk tags, but what's better is that my dad finally filled an elk tag. After seven hunts, he finally puts a bull on the ground!! I couldn't draw the deer or pronghorn tags I wanted, so maybe next year.

Now I focus on the birds.

I've taken two doe with bow so far this year... Modern firearm ~12 days out... and archery still open till Mid-Jan. ... I hope to take a couple more. Mainly going for Doe to help out with the population ... but if a nice buck happens by...

I feel a little better now, knowing that 56% of 25 people have have a box full of bullets just like me, unless they been shooting bobcats!
