Looks fairly worn, with ".38 s&w special ctg." on the barrel
Looks very similar to model 10 revolver, but with original wood grips.
Made in Springfield, Mass.
Says "m 10-5" on the inside of the revolver, hidden by cylinder.

Look old! anyone have the scoop on this model?

Edited to add: Would love to post a pic, but don't know how. Trigger guard looks bigger, and grip looks smaller than the S&W model 10.

Well, it's marked on the gun.

It's an S&W Model 10-5. It's very possible, however, that it's a round-butt version of this gun.

The 10-5 was produced from 1962 to almost 1980, IIRC.

As for the larger trigger guard, it could be an optical illusion, or it could conceivably be a factory gun with an enlarged trigger guard for winter use.

I've never heard of S&W making such a gun, but it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

Just in case this'll work and to help Tam's and Mike if they see it ...... let's try this .................

Trigger guard looks big because of small grips. Looks like '73-'74 production, so not too terribly old.

Initially - went to your link... page loaded but said i'd have to sign up to see your pic ..... but it did in fact show, which was good.

Then, just right click over image and select ''properties'' .... that will give you the whole URL for the pic. Now assuming the site permits ''hot-linking'' ..... just copy that ''properties'' URL and then paste it into the (IMG) tags here.

When you have written your message text ... go above to the ''IMG'' button and paste in the whole URL in the small dialog window, and ''OK'' it .... the code will go into your message and - then it should be a pic that is ''fetched'' from that site - to display here!!

Does that help?

edit to add ...... just noticed that #35 engraved above crest on side plate ......... hmmm .... wonder why?? Could that be an issue marking from police use perhaps??

Helps tremendously!

My dad finally found it when he was cleaning. You have to kinda push the cylinder out, its a little stiff, but then again this is the first revolver I've used. Is the cylinder supposed to swing out easily when you hit the latch?

Is the cylinder supposed to swing out easily when you hit the latch?
In essence yes. Sometimes the initial cyl release is slightly ''reluctant'' but once release is achieved the cyl and crane assembly should swing out freely ........ but I'd add ..... ''cushioned'' I hope from over travel by the way the gun is held ........ the opening cyl being cupped if possible into left hand (if you are a righty) .... I think you may be lefty as you took pic left handed.

Anyways .. a cyl should neither be opened or closed with force ..... just eased and controlled at extremes. ....... much kinder to the gun. Months ago we discussed a lot re ''snapping'' a cyl closed ..... a BIG no-no!! So opening too --------- easy does it.

N3rday ----- Check to make sure the ejector rod is not loose. Sometimes they will loosen and cause problems with getting the cylinder to open. Grab the knurled end when open and tighten by rotating CCW. (they are left hand threads).

Also check the pivot area. May need some lube or cleaning in there. If it's been sitting for a long time there is probably some nasty stuff in there.

I am actually right handed, fyi.

This has been sitting around for at least 5 years, and we have nothing to clean it with, nor ammunition for that matter...

You can drop some oil in there and just keep working it back and forth. I bought a model 15 that was sitting around for 30 years and had the same situation.

My dad was thinking about taking it to a local gun shop and getting it reblued. Waddaya think, worth it?

Unless it has serious sentimental value, I would doubt the reblue is worth it. Its about a $175 gun. A hundred bucks worth of polish and reblue would not make it a $275 gun. Neat gun though, I have several that look alot like it. Get it cleaned, checked out and have fun with it just the way it is.
