Do you guys reload 40 with Unique ? Want to reload some 180fp plated with 5. - 5.2 grains Unique and want to keep it under 1100fps..

Any favorite loads out there using Unique ? using a G23.

I tried 180gr at 1050 fps with Unique and couldn't keep them on an 8"x11" sheet of paper. Later read that hot loads of Unique were not accurate. I had 250 of them.:banghead: Switched to Universal and cured the situation. My Hi -Power did not like Unique.

5.0g under a Lee 401-175-TC works great for me. Also used it under Bear Creek 180g, and Xtreme 180g plated bullets. All work fine. It is not a hot load, I've gone to 5.8g, but I'm only punching paper so there is no need to waste powder for more recoil.

960 fps average with a 4.25" M&P 40.

I'll have to load some up and give it a spin. Thanks for your help.

I use 5.2gr Unique with 180gr hard cast truncated cone flat points or 180gr FMJ, so that should be in the ball park for plated bullet of the same weight. I've never chronographed, it but it is an good load in all my guns and I'd hard call it "light". Groups about 6" at 75 yards in my 14.5" .40S&W AR upper.

I'd start at 4.8 or 5.0 grains just to be safe with a plated bullet.

5.1 Unique with 180 grain plated bullets works fine for me. Sounds like just what you are looking for.

I used to load light and medium pistol rounds with Unique, but am finding Longshot a much better powder for medium loads. It burns cleaner with less ash, and meters better.

I have that mold and have fired many, many rounds with that exact load. It is a good one in my Sig 2022, for sure.

I imagine it would work great with that 180 grain plated bullet as well.
It's not very hard to keep a .40 load under 1,100 fps. The majority of loads within published limits come in under that.

Wow.
5.+ grains of unique really will work in anything.
I'll be danged.

Is that a sarcastic comment or true amazement? :)

For a few years I haven't had to change my powder drop settings, just check them once in a while.

5.0g Unique under a 230g bullet for 45ACP check
5.0g Unique under a 175 or 180g bullet for 40 S&W check
5.0g Unique under a 158g bullet in 38 special through a .357 revolver check
5.0g Unique under a 120g bullet for 9mm check <- don't seat it too deep however.

The interesting thing is that when you switch to Red Dot, the same volume drops about 4.2g which gets you very close to the same Pmax, just a lower MV for a lower recoil load.

I finally realized the same thing  I'll have to get an 8 pounder when they'll become avail...

Unique with 165 FMJ-FP's from 5.7-6.6 grains. At 5.7 around 950-960 fps and cycles fine. At 6.0-1010 fps. 6.3 showed 1030 fps and highest I went was 6.6 grains of Unique for 1060-1070 fps. All in a G23 in Win cases and CCI 500 primers. Unique works well for 155 and 165 grain loads I've loaded but my favorite is Winchester Super Field-WSF.
