Auction November 02, 2017

If there are no identifying marks isn't this likely a kit gun? Regardless the estimated price of up to $400 is ridiculous, and even more so if it's a kit gun.

Almost certainly a modern European copy that had been antiqued - the finish removed and identifying marks filed off. A common enough practice in the flea market world.

It depends on if it has the rest of the markings and how well they are done. Some things I like about it are the round cylinder notches and the enlarged loading cut out. If the other markings are present, complete and of correct, or close to correct, font I think $400 is not out of line for the top end value. A really good counterfeit Walker by Bob Hass and/or his assistant Acevedo has sold for $9,000 a couple years ago.

well if I really thought $200 would do it I would buy it in a heart beat. Just not that bad of a looking walker whether Italian or what ever.

I blew up the picture and it sure looks like there are letters on that top flat of the barrel. Got to wonder what they say. Looks like the cylinder lacks any sort of roll or engraving or etching.

Wouldn't we all look silly if this turned out to be a Jonathan Browning copy such as some claim are floating around Utah? I am guessing not a chance. As I say though if it were on a table at a gun show and marked $200 then there might be a thunder clap of air rushing back into the space it had been as I grabbed it up. I might even seriously consider splitting the deference between the cheapest modern available and 200 bucks. Think it would look neat on the wall or at the range.

I have run into a number of faked Walkers and Colt blackpowder pistols in general. If you attend enough gunshows and met enough "collectors", the number of aged Italian replicas pro porting to be originals is orders of magnitude greater than the original production quantity of Walkers. Maybe thousands of times greater the survival rate of actual original Walkers.

I think I read somewhere that someone complied a list of all known original Colt Walkers. I have not seen it, it would be interesting to examine.

Now somewhere, I have around the house, and so do you, a number of knives that you could sell to someone, claiming they were the original Bowie knife owned by Jim Bowie. I saw a television program where a guy went to a gunshow and bought, what he had been told, and what he claimed, was Jim Bowie's original Bowie. This guy then went home and cut the knife up into four or five pieces with a chop saw. He still believed it was original and wanted to show's historians to prove originality. What they proved was that was left of the grips was mammoth bone, and thus, unlikely to be Jim Bowie's knife.

It reminds me of those comic book ads from Johnson-Smith Novelty/Toy Company that sold "genuine replicas." You don't say.

I was bidding on that.(Didn't win, I Dropped out at $1400) You see not everyone is American and can just go to Cabela's when they have a sale on.
Those of us that live in the UK this is the closest we can get to a Walker that we don't need a firearms licence for!
These go for big money this side of the pond!!!

Easiest way to see if it's a European copy....pull a screw and check the threads

Mungojerry,

you can easily own cap and ball in England but its hard to purchase there? Not found in any stores? Not available to ship from Italy direct or from France? Just curious
thanks

REAL antiques you can buy easily as you don't need a licence for them, However you can't shoot them...(I have a .38 rimfire colt new line in my pocket as a type)
Modern repo's you need a firearms licence to buy them and you'll only get that if you belong to a club and when you leave the club you have to sell your guns as you wont have a good reason to own the gun anymore.
So OLD! guns like this even if it isn't a "Proper" Colt walker become very desirable because you can own them without ever having to sell it or get it deactivated.
......I wanna move to the States!

Wow, that does sound very restricted, the US is the obvious choice for firearms freedom but you could stick closer to home. France? it sounds like cap and ball at least over there are not regulated. But then you might have to deal with some sun in your eyes when shooting, a rare ocurrance in the UK :)

Here in Finland you get licence for new blackpowder guns without membership in a club. I have a Ruger Old army that i shoot at my backyard. And full power airguns up to .25 are also free from licence regardless of power, but apart from that we are far from the nice regulations in the US.

I made a replica of a walker once, I asked $750 for it buy it now then after a week with no sale put it down to $500 and it sold right away. Guess I should have just gave it some more time. I still made $350 profit on it!
