I'm looking to load my 327 with some .314 88gr LRN bullets that I found at an estate sale but I'm not seeing anything in the 88gr weight. Do I just round up to a 90gr .314 lead bullet that is listed in my books? My thought is that a heavier bullet of the same diameter and material will produce higher pressure and therefore will be safer than rounding down to a 85gr FMJ bullet. Is my thinking correct? How do you work up load data on a bullet you don't have data for safely? A friend sent me a link on the Hodgon's site that says you can make load data for trail boss by filling the case to the base of the bullet, weighing the powder, and multiplying by .7 to establish a start weight. Has anyone tried that?

You can use the 90 grain data with a 88 grain bullet with no problem. You still want to start at the low end and work your way up just like you should with every load even if the exact weight of the bullet is published. You can use data for a heavier bullet with a lighter bullet with no problem but NEVER use the data for a bullet with a heavier bullet. You will have higher pressure and this could get dangerous real quick. I shoot several different weight .38 bullets with the same charge of Universal, 110, 125, 130, 140 and 158 gr bullets with 5.0 grains of powder. It is close to max with the 158 so the lighter weigh bullets pose no problems at all.

Data for a heavier bullet will use less powder than the lighter bullet making the data safe with lighter bullet. In this case it the bullets are of the same composition and design such a small difference in weight makes the difference negligible. (heavier or lighter) In this case you would use the 90gr bullet data because it and your 88gr bullet are lead. The 85gr bullet is a FMJ making the data different. If all were lead and the same profile the data would possibly be the same of off by .1gr or .2gr.

Edit: I just be very slow, there were no replies when I started typing my reply lol...

Make sure the bullets are a similar type. Example would be don't mix semi wadcutter and wadcutter data.

In that case I would probably stick with semi wadcutter data....

I do same as suggested....look for similar profile, next highest weight if I can't find exactly what I want in any data I can scrounge.

Thanks guys. Adding my second cartridge and just trying to play it safe. Checked my manuals and did some internet searching but didn't find answers that satisfied me. My google Fu is extremely weak so I didn't expect much.
