at the gun show today the chit chat steered to ammo shortages coming up because A) the hornady plant explosion and B) the govt steering all new ammo their way in reaction to wars in Israel and Ukraine. And I would think future escalations. Anyone else heard this scuttlebut? If this is true, best to load up at current prices before they start climbing again

I just heard it.

It has already started as most knew it would. Like all the panics before this most will ignore it until they wake up one day and find there is none to buy. Then they will get angry and blame the retailers, the manufacturer's, the "scalpers", the hoarders, and on and on it goes. The old ant and grasshopper plays out over and over again and few seem to learn.

When I had found out about the Hornady Fire/explosion, it was only hours after I heard about the Winchestert/US Gov't plant no longer doing commercial ammo sales, I figured that's one heck of a coincidence... not. Fortunately there's more than one ammo maker in the US. Unfortunately the current ammo expansions taking place are still several years from completion.

Not to be rude or anything, but you guys are late to the party on this.

I bought ammo on the Monday after the Hamas attack, and the stores were already almost wiped completely out.

The demand for primers alone to meet the needs of two wars will throw us right back into ammo shortage. My area still hasn't recovered from the last two shortages.

Edit: Not to derail anything, but there is a good chance the US won't sit this one out, so Lake City is going to be feeding both the IDF and the US, in addition to what it was already doing for Ukraine. We live in perilous times.

I believe Lake City said they were behind, and they needed extra time to catch up.

People will find a way to panic and the run on ammo... has already begun!

People with garages full of ammo will be panic buying. That's the level of pants on head ridiculous that has once again started.

Truth be told, already been slowly buying ammo anyways again. Just need to get more ammo cans. I don't have thousands of rounds of ammo, but I have plenty to at least hit the range and do a few mags. But it's still lacking overall.

Was wondering when this would happen, next is the gouging on 9mm, 5.56 and maybe .45acp.
Well since we have a wholesale account with Davidsons and Chattanooga I can tell real quick who is actually charging absurd pricing. Since bigger shops will get a bigger discount than we can so they should be paying less than we are. Cause we can't afford to buy 5 pallets of ammo all at once. Maybe a couple cases here and there.

I think some members of this group need to take a basic economics class. At least look up how supply and demand impact the equilibrium (price) point.

The whole point of a free market system is that sellers get top dollar for their wares and buyers pay as little as possible for goods and services. The price is somewhere in between. Anything else is a command economy. I really...really do not want some authority figure in my life setting the prices I pay for things. I mean, if you think the Biden administration should step in and set ammo prices for you...and you think you're going to get a fair deal...good luck with that.

I don't blame this on politics. I blame it on the manufacturers/sellers of ammo and reloading components. They are rascals that should wear a patch over one eye. This may never turn around but then again it may very well turn around. Only the almighty dollar will decide.

Well crap, this is all that shows up on Chattanooga for 5.56 ammo.

4 whole SKUs.....

And Davidsons has 2 SKUs.....
And notice they're all the most expensive variants. Get used to it, folks. For a long time. (Unless, of course, Israel cancels their response to Hamas and the Ukrainians surrender to the Soviets.) There will likely be at least "some" ammo available for a while, but eventually, that will go, too.

One of my concerns is for the hunting crowd. Last couple of seasons, even common hunting ammo has been either unobtainium or trés expensive. I suspect that is due to the demand for primers in military contracts. I really believe that primers are the choke point. Powder has been available, at least sporadically, for about the past year or so, but I have only seen primers for sale once in the past five years.
