I bought an inexpensive Remington model 514 single shot, bolt action .22LR to teach my kids to shoot. The factory sight is a rudimentary sheet metal leaf sight with notched elevator mounted in a dovetail on the barrel. Here's a picture of the same model rifle:

I would like to upgrade it to a better quality sight with more precise windage and elevation adjustment capability, so I can teach my sons how to zero a rifle. My general preference would be an aperture sight, since that's what I learned with. However, I would also consider an open front sight, as long as it had windage and elevation screws. The rifle is already cheap, so I would like to keep the sight inexpensive too, nothing too fancy.

As I understand it, I have 2 mounting options: 1) in the dovetail notch on the front barrel, or 2) on the receiver, which is predrilled with pairs of holes fore and aft. If I go with the dovetail, I will need to use an open leaf sight, while I can use an aperture sight on the receiver, correct?

Can anyone suggest a good product to consider?

Also, if I go with a folding leaf sight on the barrel, I might put a weaver base on the receiver so I can use a cheapo Walmart scope for plinking. Are receiver holes drilled to some kind of uniform standard for a generic weaver base, or must I find a model-specific base?

Thanks in advance for thoughts and advice.

Disrgard most of my question. Did some more research and learned that my rifle, like most .22's, is grooved for a tip-off type scope. So I don't need a weaver base, unless I want to mount an apeture sight on the rear receiver.

If you're looking for a really good reciever sight that has it all, I'd look into a William's FP appature sight. If you want one at a lowe price, the 5D, but it is without knob adjustments, but has screw set adjustments that once sighted in, lock down and don't move.

Ir check into the Marble's "Bullseye" sight that fit the 3/8" dovetail and will give you a rear sight that is on the barrel, but has a ring inside a ring. Tha one goes for under 20 bucks and is quite good for a cheap way to get a better sight picture with an appature style, but barrel mounted. I've used all three and they are all good...
