I want an A2 rifle upper for my new AR build. Does anyone manufacture an upper with a 1:8 twist barrel that is the standard government profile? Everything I've seem is 1:7 or 1:9 in government profile. 1:8 seems reserved for the heavy match contour.

Doh, didn't notice you wanted the A2. Just buy the barrel you want and put it together yourself. All the A2 uppers I know of are of the NM variety.

I'm going with no on an A2 upper with gov't profile 1 in 8 barrel. Shouldn't cost too much to have a barrel turned down and then mated to an A2 upper however.

Any AR barrel will fit any AR upper receiver, whether A2 or not. Maybe I'm missing something???

Contact WOA or ADCO, they might turn one down for you. DPMS has a 18" medium profile barrel with 1:8. Look for it at MidwayUSA.

Or you could get an upper with the barrel you want and a detatchable carry handle. Unless you like an unnecesarily heavy upper. ;)

OK Comrade I have to ask. Why a government profile barrel with a 1 in 8 twist.

Just curious.

I think it would be the best of the best as far as a rifle length AR would be concerned. Standard weight with a more favorable twist rate than the 1:7 and 1:9's

Why do you want 1:8? If you only shooting heavy bullets, 68gr and up to 80gr, 1:7 twist is fine. If you going to shoot 55gr and up to 77gr, then either, 1:8 or 1:7, will do.

So you want a 20" HBAR? if so, look at a Criterion barrel at Fulton Armory.

Comrade, again, I am not trying to be a jerk. I am just trying to learn something here. I just don't understand what you are trying to accomplish with the gun. Every twist rate has a purpose.
From 1:12 to 1:9 to 1:8 to 1:7. I guess the question is: “What are you going to do with the gun?” The only 1:8 twist barrels I have seen are on Space Guns for across the coarse high-power
matches. I have always wondered why they just didn't use a 1:7 twist. I have asked more than a few people. I have never gotten a performance based answer.

The last 1:7 gun I had would not shoot 55 grain ammunition well
enough for my standards past 50 yards. On the same coin the 1:9 my dad has does not like anything above 69 grains. My experience with the 1:8 twist in an AR is that it will shoot a more useful range of bullet weights equally well.

That is highly unusual. What details can you provide about it?

The last Rifle length upper I bought was palmetto state armory. It was a 1:7 and could barely hold a 5 inch group off a rest with 55 grain ammo. I will note that this is not shooter error, I've shot plenty of other AR's just fine.

There's your problem.

Let's just say I didn't have that upper very long ;) you definitely get what you pay for and I will never buy a thing from them again.

Either way I want to play around with a 1:8 and see what's what. Rock river has a medium contour in the configuration I want, I think I'm gonna go with them when I have an extra 600 lying around :D

To rskent: 1:8 is very popular with 3 gunners. There are quite a few manufactures using 1:8 now. Not just for space guns these days.

Gotigers - Thanks, what is the advantage in a three gun match? Again just asking. I have never shot a three gun match.

Both of my 223 Ar's are 1:7 twist. At a hundred yards they both shoot 52 grain match kings as well as 77 s. I shoot mostly
69 grain match kings. I am not looking for terminal ballistics with my (match) rifles just accuracy on target.

On a side note, I have been thinking that an AR with a 20” 1 : 12 twist. Might just replace my G19 for home defense.

Shoot the 55 grain and the 77 grain loads out to 300 yards. You'll notice

Pretty sure those FN sourced barrels PSA gets are just as good as RRA. And what ammo were you using?

I used The Federal XM109 or what ever the designation is, Winchester white box, and wolf just for kicks.

All of which shoot well under 5 inches at 100 out of my dad's RRA carbine in 1:9

I should hope they can shoot under 5 MOA.

And a 1:9 twist is just fine for typical projectiles like the 55gr FMJ or 62gr FMJ with steel cone (SS109 style bullet)
