My understanding is that there are no handguns and only a limited number of long guns allowed in New York City.

What about New York State in general? Can someone moving into upstate New York bring their guns? Handguns? Long guns? ARs?

No handguns without a Pistol Permit (its not worth it imo.) Long guns are OK as long as theyre not black and scary (AWB applies) No AR's that pass the 'evil' test.

Handguns need to be on a NYS Pistol Permit. Rifles/shotguns are ok, no permit needed. AR's are ok, with non-adjustable stocks. I guess the libs that run this joint think an adjustable stock AR is more deadly than one with a fixed stock. There may be more rules governing ownership of AR's, that one needs to be researched more.

Unless you sell illegal drugs or are a gang banger. Then guns are ok in NYC. No special paperwork.

Look up the NYS laws on the NRA's website. The old Clinton AWB is in full effect, that means bayonet lugs, adjustable stocks, pistol grips, threaded muzzle and some things I'm sure I have forgotten. If you are bent on bringing an AR buy up all the preban mags and get a preban lower and you will be good to go. Handguns, I think it largely depends on the county as far as permits go but if I were moving there I would leave my handguns until I had residency established and had worked through the permit process then just bring in the ones I wanted to document or just buy new ones when you are cleared.
I know a guy that runs a charter on lake Ontario and he said the permit process wasn't to bad for him, I think he lived in Jefferson Co.

He needs to get rid of bayonet lugs on ARs, also.

Stupid laws, IMO.

Atlantis, search out and read the laws. You are only getting part of the story here and NY police could give a rats a$$ what you read on the internet, they will gladly put you in jail.
The old AWB is alive and well there as well as other unpleasant surprises.

Do not..!!

DO NOT.. under any circumstances bring/take your handguns into NYS.. and NYC in particular!

Unlike other states where one can possess a handgun without having to have a "permit" of some kind, NYS is different. One must have a NYS "license" to possess a handgun (even though you may be "licensed" in other states to do so).. and depending upon the county you live in, it has been know to sometimes take as long as 6-7-8 months or more to get one, while in some other areas of NYS it's near impossible. (Downstate NY.)

Also.. NYS is a "show cause why, may issue" state, unlike most states that are non-show cause why, must issue! In addition.. the legal paperwork one must normally go through, ie: 4 personal character references from the same county you're living in who's known you for at least 5 years, reason for wanting license (note: self defense/personal protection is a automatic denial), etc., etc.

Depending upon the county you live in, many "LCP's" are restricted to.. hunting, target shooting, collector, job/occupation, etc., etc. God help the person who has a hunting or target shooting restriction on their LCP and they're caught carrying on "downtown main street" at 2am in one of the big cities! The cops wouldn't think a second time about snapping the cuffs on you.

So in conclusion..

DO NOT even think about bringing your handguns into NYS at this point in time. Good luck in getting your LCP.

Single Action Six

P.S. In the past, the back of the NYS LCP listed the make, caliber, serial number, model and rev. or auto on it.

There are more than a few young soldiers who have been stationed at FT. Drum that came from some of the free states that found themselves in jail because they possesed something that was perfectly normal in their home state.
My son is one of the lucky ones that was able to remove his contraban before he was found with it. In his case it was a post ban AR with all the ugly features, I did some research (NRA States Laws) and gave him a friendly nudge and he brought it home on his next trip. I have heard of and read news articles of those not so lucky.
I'm not sure how all those personal HiCap PMags would have fared if he would have been stopped and checked but they came home with him from Iraq and nothing was said. Thankfully he is out of NYS for good, beautiful place just screwed up laws.

As prior military and originally from NY myself, I know all about the aggrevation. I had several of my EMPTY mags from deployment and my body armor in my car going to see my folks. Got pulled over in a "Random enforcement search" just outside Ft. Drumm. Luckily they didn't find them, but they specifically target military (stickers, DOD passes etc.) just looking to nail somone. Say what you want, but after 5 years of it, I left. I refuse to live in a state that doesn't let you own whatever God D*mned gun you want!!!

Upstate encompasses many areas, rural to metropolitan. Depending on where you are you will find State , County and possibly city restrictions. Call the county you are interested in and they will tell you specifically what you need to know- some have web sites with the info.
As far as NYS goes some rural are not bad - metropolitan very restrictive.

If you're moving to NYS, try to find a NY FFL who will hold your handguns until you get your permit. It can take as much as six months for the permit to come through. You should also discuss his fees with him ahead of time. Some of them will still want to charge a fee per gun to transfer them to you -- yes, your own guns! Others will work out a package price, esp. if you have a lot of handguns. I know someone who recently did it, and cut a deal with the FFL of $100 for 15 handguns instead of $35 per.

I grew up in the Syracuse area, but I have since moved out of the state... I don't plan on returning either.

The "may issue" handgun policy, 10 round magazine cap, and permanent Clinton Assault weapons ban as state law are enough to keep me out... not to mention the taxes.

Beautiful state, but too much of a fascist enclave for me. Good luck.

Yea take the laws and taxes of Wyoming and put them in New York and I couldn't get there fast enough, that place is a sportsman's paradise.
My youngest is at the USAFA and wants to do a semester at West Point, I guess guns won't matter to him there since the USAFA is probably the most restrictive place in his home state. At least he is not going to do 4 yrs in NY. He wants to fly A10's and I think New Jersey is a home to an A10 Squadron so he may get his chance at living under tyranny.
