US Postal refused to ship my rifle.

Typical of most postal workers in my area..

I have four local post offices that I have had to give firearm shipping tutorials to over the last year. I always go equipped with my ffl, the receivers ffl (if there is one) a filled out copy of the USPS form 1508 (available online) and the pertinate regs (available on my desk top). They always say we can't mail guns, I always say "of course you can mail guns". They always show me the wall poster that says you can't ship guns, I always refere them to the asterisk in the guns column. Thay always say it has to go registered, I always say show me the regulation that says anything beyond it is reccomended. I always inform them thay have to keep the 1508 for 1 year, thay always admit they have never been aware of that. The guy behind the counter always thanks me for my patience, the women always continue to glare at me. Thay always remember me the next time I come in. YMMV

I had the same thing happen to me. Eventually after calling around enough I got someone to confirm that I was allowed to ship the rifle and I went back and shipped it, very much against the will of the lady at the counter.

Also, it may help to remind them that they cannot give you legal advice. Technically, I don't think they are even allowed to ask if you have a firearm in the box. You are supposed to declare it.

One thing I'm not clear on is whether this happened at a real post office or a shipping postal annex (private contractor.) If it was a real post office, then a supervisor has to be on-site and the Post Master is almost always available during core business hours.

If it was an annex, you might not win your battle on-site. You might have to go to the real post office which awarded the contract (not always the closest one to the annex) and talk to the Post Master there about the actions of their contractor.

Either way, you CAN win this battle, if you feel it is worth the effort.

First , Im not trying to sensationalize if thats what one respondent said. This is free speech here and as long we dont use profanity its okey. You can have your own interpretation and thats fine. A lot of people here have had previous experiences similar to mine and are more than happy to give advises. I welcome that as everyone here benefits one way or the other.
BTW this happened in a real post office not in some small drop off center. As an update I finally contacted the post master on that particular PO and explained what happened, I quoted the ATF ruling specific to this regard and the Post Office manual in shipping rifles. She was apologetic and promised to address this to the employees behind the counter.

There is NO EXCUSE for a Goverment Empolyee

Not to know his job and regulations. FILE A FORMAL COMPLAINT! (I don’t care if they are nice they are INCOPMETENT) They will then get the proper training. They are making up their own rules do not stand for it. They are being paid well, the least they can do for the paycheck and pension is to do the job correctly.

Not taking the shipment is denial of service. If between 2 ffl's in seperate state it is delay of interstate commerce. This is a BIG DEAL to the USPS.

the postal service is far more interested in overselling products than knowing anything about any stinking regulations.
